This is such a sweet little glimpse of a an obviously lovely woman. In that photo, she reminds me a little of Bea Arthur back in the days when she played Maude. What a treasure she must be. I'm glad you still have her in your life, and you were able to reach her, to touch her, and to connect with her. Thanks for sharing this. <3

I can totally see the resemblance :)

Thank you for reading, and Nana is amazing. I have so many stories about her and Papa.

I'm lucky. My brother and I are the oldest of all the grandchildren, and when I say oldest, I mean the oldest. Our next cousins are in their 20s, they just turned 21. They were born when I was in high school. So as much as it sucks not being able to grow up with cousins, who were like sisters and brothers and best friends like so many other people, we got to spend the most time with our grandparents, when they still led pretty active lifestyles.

That's nice you still get to talk to your grandmother.
From Russia to Mexico to the US ... quite an adventure!

She left Russia to escape the Nazis during World War 2. She tried getting into the US, but they claimed they had met their quota of Russian immigrants and wouldn't let her in. So the boat turned around and went to Mexico, where they were accepting Russian immigrants. She got a degree to be an OBGYN from UNAM and met my grandfather, papa when she was working as a nurse during the Korean War and he was working as a doctor during the Korean War. When they got engaged, they moved to the Bronx in NYC.

She's had such a fascinating life
