The only thing I knew when I was younger was that I didn’t want to spend my life living in New Jersey. I just wasn’t sure where I wanted to go

This is such an interesting post! Thank you for sharing your experiences.
As someone who has lived in Brooklyn my entire life in a very much URBAN area, moving to NJ has been such a blessing because where we live now is a mix between urban and suburban. I'm only 40 mins away by bus from the Manhattan, but we can also hop into our car and go anywhere in Jersey and it feels so suburban. So it's a nice medium between urban (which has gotten overwhelming for me) and suburban (which I don't think I would be able to do since it's too quiet). Both my partner and I want to move somewhere warm next though. California seems really great (even though it's expensive).
I've been to Austin a few times and I LOVE IT so much. I would move to Texas in a heartbeat, but what I love about Austin specifically is that it also has that suburban/urban mix feel. So many great coffee shops, restaurants, yoga studios etc within a short drive anywhere in the city. But if you can also get an entire HOUSE for the price of a studio apartment in NYC with a backyard on a quiet block. Also, I love the hot weather. Even in peak July heat I didn't mind it. But I also understand that it's a little more dry than Houston?
OH MY GOD I LOVE TEXAN BBQ. SO GOOD!
I don't think we would seriously move to Texas though because we both grew up in extremely liberal households and I don't think our liberal souls would survive in Texas, lol? We can't take guns or racist attitude towards immigrants, etc. I mean just the concept of walking into a store where a guy had an open carry gun in Texas and was getting all huffy puffy about something while clutching his gun and threatening someone else...was a cultural shock for me. That's not a thing here.
So probably California it is for us. Also, my partner has a medicinal prescription for weed and Texas' draconian weed laws are another factor for us.
Austin is a really fun city. If it wasn't for Justin, I'd probably move to Austin over Houston. I love how unique it is.
Austin is also one of the most liberal cities in Texas, it's def more liberal than Houston is. It's weird seeing so much conservativeness around the Houston area, but Houston is getting bluer than it used to be, at least.
I think California would be out of the price range for two teachers, though Justin and I both love Cali, we're open to Washington and Oregon too.
