Yay, concert! (Post #10)

Despite how poor sineala has been feeling poorly all week, we went to see Melissa Ferrick last night at the Iron Horse, yay! It was awesome, of course, and I'm glad sineala went with me, even though she didn't feel well. Wuv. :)

The Iron Horse is totally my favorite place to go to concerts. We've gotten pretty good at getting there at the right time to get the seats I like (the tables for two along the right side, where you're really close but the view isn't blocked usually and you don't have to be too too close to other people, which anti-social me likes), and okay, this is sad, but I think sometimes my favorite thing about going there at all is the food beforehand, because I am *crazy* about their veggie burger. It's *SO* good -- I don't know what's in it (they only say that it's got "vegetables" and is vegan), and it's sort of pale-ish, very firm, and OM NOM NOM SO GOOD. I actally dislike a lot of veggie burgers, and it's rare for me to be able to finish one--usually by the time I've gotten two-thirds of the way through or so I just can't stand the thought of eating any more. This is the one I would happily eat a second one. And a third. And... Yeah. They're apparently serving it with salad now instead of chips/fries, which is fine, I love salad, and putting a few sad pieces of grilled squash on top. That's weird. I ate the squash first not with the veggie burger. It also has a delicious "garlic and herb aioli" with it, which I thought was non-vegan, so that seems to defeat the purpose of telling you the burger is vegan (and what about the bun? it's the same one they use for the meat-sandwiches, it looks like), but whatever it's all SO GOOD.

Ahem. Anyway, after veggie burger, Melissa played -- there was no opener, so she actually placed a set that was close to two hours long, mostly with her new band (drums, bass, and fiddle, which was cool, and worked really well on some of the songs, although the [boy] drummer did a much better job of singing [falsetto] backup than did the [girl] fiddler who just should've played violin and not sung with), but some of it solo. How she can have the stamina to perform that much is amazing. (She's mentioned on FB and stuff having had a hard Dec/Jan, and she looks like she hasn't been very well, or something--thinner than usual, and sort of peaky--but it wasn't apparent in her playing.) We're two albums behind, it seems, so I didn't know a lot of the songs, which is always a little less fun (yeah, I should buy those albums and catch up), but she did play some older stuff (Anything, Anywhere, This Is Love, North Carolina, Everything I Need--which was *awesome*, and a couple others that are not coming to mind), including Drive/Welcome to My Life, but which was not at the end? She put it in about 35 minutes in, which was so odd -- the woman next to us asked me, "Is the set over?" And I was like, "Uh, no idea? She's only been playing for 35 minutes?" I can appreciate that she's probably tired of them (I would be if I were her), but how would putting them randomly in the middle help that? Anyway, I liked some of the newer songs, but it makes me sad that so many are sad, still. I liked the album that seemed to have happier songs, which one was that, the one with Closer?

Anyway, overall, it was awesome, and I am glad we live somewhere so awesome that we can just walk downtown and see things like that--I feel sad for the people on FB who were like, "Yeah! I'm driving 450 miles to see Melissa for the first time!" My three favorite people to see live (Melissa, Erin McKeown, and the Nields sisters) all live in the state, and play here a lot, and Erin lives in Greenfield, and the Nields live around here somewhere close too. Because here is so awesome.
