Yesterday was Boscobel and it was so ridiculously pleasant. Better than last year, I'd say.

I went in Mackenzie's car, so it was Mackenzie, Amanda, Mark, Michelle, and I. We drove up to Boscobel on the Palisades Parkway, and we got there at 5 pm, an hour earlier than the grounds opened. (Boscobel is this estate that was owned by some family and then was donated to become historic grounds in Hudson Valley, New York.) So we went to the Village of Cold Spring, New York, where we hung around and walked. Everything was CLOSED, and mind you, it was 5 pm. All the stores were antique shops and it was so quiet and peaceful and ADORABLE except for these four teenaged boys hollering and pretending to skateboard. I'm pretty convinced I'm the darkest person they've ever seen. Anyway, we ate and trainspotted (not the drug movie, like actual HOLY SHIT IT'S A TRAIN! IN A VILLAGE! kind of stuff) and then we got back in the car and returned to Boscobel because it was after 6.

Boscobel is absolutely beautiful. It's on this hill overlooking the Hudson Valley marshes so all you see is water (occasionally a boat), West Point (the military academy) and an occasional train. It is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. This isn't a very good picture, but it gets the point across. There's also woods that have paths and random gazebos scattered about and sculptures everywhere. I absolutely love it.

Anyway, the play was also really, really good. They did Cymbeline absolutely correctly (which was good, because I didn't really like their Richard III last year.) Their Imogen was annoying and the Queen - who played Lady Anne last year - thankfully has gained acting skill so she's gone from terrible to just bad, but Posthumus - Richard last year, who was amazing - was SO GOOD. Their mountaineers made me SO PROUD and they were so cute and now Yasmeen and I have to learn how to yodel. They played Iachimo funny, which I didn't like, but I loved their Cloten.

so yes. Boscobel a must. I don't really want to see Twelfth Night, but I do just want to drive back up and explore Cold Spring more as well as hang out in the woods longer. Since they only open the picnic area at 6 and the play starts at 8, after you eat and all that you don't have much time to just hang about. It's just a wonderful, beautiful day all around.

Though I am slightly annoyed they cut out 85% of Arviragus's lines. I was all set to recite them with the actor, too. :p

cymbeline, shakespeare, boscobel
