When it comes to restaurants with a view in Shanghai, perhaps none come to mind as quickly as Jade on 36. Situated on the 36th floor of the Pudong Shangri-La, it boasts an impressive view of the Bund and the magnificent Shanghai skyline.

The chef cooked this up for us. The waiter spent 5 minutes explaining to us the various pieces, but his accent was rather thick (or perhaps it was because I was spacing out), but apparently, it was a platter of sesame squid ink crackers & tuna pate & cranberry (?) mochi balls. At first glance, the crackers looked like cloth, or dried kelp. They were extremely dry, to be sure, but went well with the creamy tuna pate dip. And the mochi balls were amazingly chewy.
Anyways, let me fast forward to the desserts:

My dessert. If Chocolate had its own pavilion at the world expo, this would be it.
It had 6 different layers: a cold melted chocolate egg perched on top, a thin & crispy chocolate square, diced almonds, a solid block of milk chocolate with apricot or peach compote (not sure which), and a thin layer of chocolate oreo cake on the bottom. It was astounding. (120RMB / US$20)

Chilled strawberry soup. I didn't particularly care for it. I'm not a fan of cooked strawberries, and besides, it wasn't as sweet as I'd have liked. (110RMB / US$20)

Yummy French toast with a melange of berries and caramel ice cream and toffee. My second favorite of the night. (110RMB / US$20)

An apricot & pistachio sandwich. This was a very delicate dessert -- delicately put together, delicately flavored. It was light as air; the white sticks melted like marshmallows in my mouth. The wafer blended in quite nicely with the apricot sauce, in both color and taste. (120RMB / US$20)
