It feels surreal and beyond weird, I have to say. After 131 episodes(!), I'm ready to part with my 'hardcore Criminal Minds fan club' membership card and find something else to obsess over. It's been fun. \o/
Anyway. The last episode. Damn. Damndamndamndamndamn! It was epic, it was heartbreaking, it was amazing and even femslashy. The writers did the character justice, as I knew they would. So, lo and behold, the last ever (barring a surprise comeback taking place in the future) Criminal Minds picspam.
This time, we open with Emily in Boston with a glass a scotch (it's like playing Clue). She's still sporting the hot-as-hell outfit from the previous episode, the one with the leather jacket.
Well, hello there, Agent Gay.
Emily then has a flashback to the time when she was working undercover and trying to bed a rogue IRA activist. Smoking shouldn't be this hot.
Hot, even with the fringe. And speaking French? Holy hell. Much more convincing than the bits of Italian during "Demonology"; the way she says "si tu savais" gives me palpitations.
Meanwhile, the team is trying to make some sense of the whole mess and what's going on with Emily. They eventually figure it out that Emily is actually one of the undercover agents, and that she's split the scene. Of course, Rossi quickly comes to the conclusion that she ran in order to protect the team. Cue to: the world's smallest violin.
But! Hotch has a plan, y'all.
Rossi: She's a trained spy, she doesn't wanna be found. [A/N: I cannot get over the awesomeness of this]
Morgan: She knows all of our tricks, we don't know any of hers.
Garcia: Right, then how do we find her?
Hotch: Here's how. Ian Doyle is our unsub, Prentiss is our victim. [...] Because terrorism isn't an area we specialize in, I've reached out to an expect from the State Department. Someone who can also shed light into Prentiss' past.
Reid: Who?
Indeed, who could it possibly be?
Hotch: [looks at the doors] Her.
JJ: Let's get to work.
OHIKdfoknfkjhkk!!!! So many things to comment on. So. many. effing. things.
First of all, "Someone who can also shed light into Prentiss' past"? That is just so totally gay, I can't even. Even if JJ now does work for the State Department, that doesn't mean she'd be the one with the most information about Emily's work history (even if she could look it up, and in that case, Garcia would be much more useful). There must be ten other people who actually know the Doyle case personally, and basides, when did JJ turn into a terrorism expert? So yeah, it's pretty obvious why Hotch, nevertheless, called JJ. So femslashy.
Secondly, JJ! Oh, I've missed you. ♥ She looks all professional and tough and lets-get-my-girlfriend-out-of-this-pickle-stat. Damn, she's hot.
So, JJ has the complete copy of the blacked out CIA file, and there are some interesting things in it.
"Medal of bravery"? I knew it! She's a friggin' super!spy. "Speciality: psychology." No surprises there. "Next of kin: N/A." That is so telling. "Citizenship: Belgium." Wait, isn't this supposed to be a CIA file? So Emily isn't American at all? Or does she have dual citizenship? "Weapons dealing specialist." God, that's hot.
And just how amazing is it to see JJ giving a briefing again? Especially when she's noticeably annoyed by Emily's last undercover assignment.
Hotch: How close did [Emily] get to Doyle as part of her cover?
JJ: The recon they did on Doyle included a background of all of his romantic relationships. [pause] Emily was his type.
We can practically hear JJ gnashing her teeth.
But Morgan. Why do you have to be such a jerk? "She looks awfully comfortable." Well, d'uh! If you're undercover, you're UNDERCOVER. What an idiot. And the whole scene with Rossi is just... Morgan, what the hell? Ridiculous.
Anyway. Another flashback & Emily looking as gorgeous as ever as an arms dealer.
Thank you, TPTB, thank you.
So yeah, the flashback has Emily and Doyle sharing ~*~a moment~*~, the two of them kissing, which is just wrong on so many levels, and finally Emily's this-operation-is-killing-me look behind Doyle's back.
Back in the present day, Garcia has left Emily a voice mail in one of her old numbers, just in case. Emily decides to take a listen.
Awww, poor bb. Don't cry. *pets* It's heartbreaking, it really is.
But the sorrow is soon eclipsed by determination as Doyle steps out of the bar and Emily slips back into a spy mode. Om nom nom.
A friggin' machine gun. *iz ded*
But Doyle gets her and brands her with a hot iron. Nice. The bra she's wearing is rather nice, too.
So, stuff happens, a bad guy that has information about Doyle gets killed in front of Rossi and Seaver, Doyle is being mean to Emily, and JJ is nowhere to be seen. While the team is trying to find clues and bond with the British agent friend of Emily's, Emily is trying to play time.
By mentioning Doyle's son Emily's able to prolong the inevitable once more. As it turns out, the son is the key here, and we get a sob story about said son getting killed after his arrest and blah, blah, blah. I should be more intrigued, but all I want to see is Emily kicking some criminal arse.
Granted, they do portray Doyle as human, though, which is refreshing. He truly did love his son - and Emily uses/used that against him. Snap!
So, dun-dun-dun! It's time for the final battle and things get dicey.
A sharp wooden object to the stomach? Ouch. Doyle slips away as the FBI is raiding the building, and Morgan gets to Emily's side, finally realising that what she did, first back in the day, and again now is nothing short of heroic.
Emily: [whispering] Let me go.
I nearly cried. Morgan refuses to give up, and as he's pleading for Emily to say with him, the scene fades into the next one.
JJ: [approaching the team] She never made it off the table.
All the sadness aside (it really is lovely, in a bittersweet way, how much the team will miss her), why is it JJ who suddenly appears and brings the bad news? She's completely absent in the previous hospital shots. Obvious, people, obvious! The writers aren't even trying to hide it anymore that those two totally have a past. Besides, JJ has adopted Emily's belt buckle and watch.
After hugging Reid, JJ steps into the corridor with Hotch and inaudible dialogue follows (I think Hotch says "I don't know"). Now it truly bugs me whether Hotch knows the real side of things or not.
The funeral is just as obvious as the hospital scene, because JJ is depicted as the grieving wife (which she, of course, is).
Of course it's JJ who places her rose on top of the casket first. Subtle, but my femslash-loving heart is singing with joy. Also, the way the camera stays on JJ a lot longer than on anyone else is a dead giveaway.
My heart is singing even louder when we're suddenly transported to Paris, France (weeks later), and a certain blonde press liaison makes her way to a small outdoor café next to the Eiffel Tower.
JJ: [handing over an envelope] Passports from three different countries and a bank account in each one to keep you comfortable.
Emily: [softly] Thank you.
JJ: Good luck.
I find it deliciously femslashy that JJ flew ALL THE WAY to Paris just so she could hand over the documents. There were no US agents in France, or even Europe? Indeed. JJ needed to see Emily one last time; the fic practically writes itself! There is no way anyone will ever be able to convince me that these two aren't canon. Especially when it all ends with Emily walking away and JJ looking after her longingly.
Farewell, my darling show. ♥
Now we'll just have to wait and see whether
Paget's new show will be picked up or not. I'm not that optimistic, especially when it comes to sitcoms, but hopefully we'll get at least a couple of episodes of Paget doing comedy. She's
so ridiculously good at it.
