Top15 Romcoms of All-time

Sep 20, 2010 23:58

Yes, I confess, despite of being the biggest commitment phobe in the world, I'm also a hopeless romantic with an embarrassingly large collection of romcoms. There, I said it. Seeing other people live happily ever after is lovely, but if, in real life, someone proposed anything to me, I'd run for the hills. It's complicated ( Read more... )

I was never much for happy endings. That said, on with the squee: so_wicked September 20 2010, 22:15:44 UTC
My goodness... how many times have I seen Six Days Seven Nights! I loved that movie. I should watch it again soon because I haven't seen it in years and now I'm all yay! about it.

Love Actually is most probably my very favorite RomCom. Just like you, I find Jamie and Aurelia's storyline to be the bestest. Also, "To me you are perfect"... I turn into a pile of goo every time over that. How fraking romantic is that?!

Imagine Me And You, my god... That film just makes me smile so much. I actually have the poster framed and mounted on my wall, that's how much I love it.

Sliding Doors, just like SDSN, I haven't seen in ages, but I love it and I should watch it again, soon.

What is it about the British, making such brilliant films, with fantastic, always quotable lines and fantastic humor? I'm seriously not a big fan of romantic comedies, but their films turn my aloofness into glittery girly squee.

I admit to always checking out most of the new romcoms, but it's basically once in a blue moon that one of them impresses me as much as these ones have. I might be a hopeless romantic, but I still have taste. ;)

In Love Actually, the part which always makes me sigh is Jamie & Aurelia's "It's my favorite time of day, driving you." // "It's the saddest part of my day, leaving you." exchange. Aww!

Having an IMAY poster on your wall = AWESOME.

The British just generally do everything better, that's just a fact. ;)

Oh dear, you're making me feel so olde. So very olde. I believe they may have made a few acceptable romantic comedies (See how old I am? I spelled out the full words. Yes, I know. Hopeless.) before the last decade of the 20th century. And it's not that I'm quibbling with your choices. I admit to not having seen many, the ones I have I won't argue, at least not strenuously. But at the risk of, gee, I don't know, a stoning?, the old scholar in me insists I mention a few names. Cary Grant and Irene Dunne (she's sadly neglected these days) in The Awful Truth and My Favorite Wife (skip Penny Serenade, it's maudlin and certainly not a comedy), Cary Grant (yes, him again!) and Katharine Hepburn in Holiday, Bringing Up Baby, and The Philadelphia Story. Carole Lombard and William Powell in My Man Godfrey, Carole Lombard and Frederick March in Nothing Sacred. Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable in It Happened One Night. Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea in The Palm Beach Story. Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda in The Lady Eve. Barbara Stanwyck ( ... )

Actually, I stated at the beginning of the entry that I only took into account the movies from the 1980s and onwards - exactly for the reason you stated, heh. Otherwise, the list would've ended up being called "Top100 Romantic Comedies of All-time", and 20 of those movies would've starred Cary Grant.

[edit] CANNOT SPELL.

Yeah, I saw it after I posted. I just wanted to put the names out there for those not familiar. I fear that these gems will be lost from the collective consciousness, which would be a shame. It's not like Shakespeare or Ibsen are of less value because they wrote with ink and not a keyboard and I hope these films will not be dismissed for being in 3:4 ratio and black & white.

I have so many things that I should say about this list (up to and including thanking your for the recs to add to my (embarrassingly large) collection of cheesy romcoms), but my reaction to this comment superseeded them all:

Everyone and their mother should see this.

Funny you should say that. Because the last time I came to visit my mother (she lives in France, I do not), I bought the movie and she sat down to watch it with me, and clapped her hands in delight at the end (I'm not even kidding). She said it was, and I will always remember this quote 'everything [she] loved in a movie' (although, I will own, she was sad for Heck...although to be fair, so am I). She loved it, which kind of made me love it all the more (and made me love my mother...not that I didn't...Um, that didn't come out right).

Also, um, do you mind if I friend you? Only I've been following your recaps for a while, and I enjoy your movie/music posts.

Yay! Another romcom lover! I don't know why it's so socially awkward to admit liking chick flicks. :p

Wow, your mother sounds like an amazing person! Maybe I should try the same with mine. Hmm... And no worries, I know exactly what you mean by loving her (more) after that, heh.

Also, um, do you mind if I friend you?

Friend away! I'll add you back, too. ♥

Lol, I know. I get depressed when I think we live in a world where it's more socially acceptable to admit you like the 'Saw' films than something like 'Defintely, Maybe' (one of my favourite guilty pleasures) or 'Love, Actually' (oh, and I'm with you that the Aurelia/Jamie plot was my favourite).

She is, although we get on so much better now that we don't live in the same country...it sounds odd, but I think distance gave us a much better perspective on our relationship.

Thank you :)

Oh, and do you mind if I steal this idea? I will give you full creative credit, and link to your post - it's just that your post has made me want to spread the love of the romcom to my flist :) (And I was going to do a list like this anyway, but probably not finish it - starting list posts and not finishing them is kind of a signature of mine, sadly. I've done 'top forty songs of all time', i've done 'top ten movies', and your entry has inspired me to scribble down my top ten romcoms). As I said, I'll credit and link, and I won't do it if you are not comfortable with me riding the coat-tails of your idea :)

I absolutely love that subplot in Love Actually too. (The airport scene makes me sniffle, too.)

I *heart* Imagine Me and You (duh), but did you hear it was originally supposed to be a tv series? I think it would have been an even higher magnitude of awesome given a year or two to play out (of course, knowing what tv does to most characters I love, maybe it's for the best this way).

The airport scene and the "It's my favorite time of day, driving you." exchange. Dreamy.

did you hear it was originally supposed to be a tv series?

Seriously? Damn. I'm not actually able to decide which one I'd prefer; a TV show could've been interesting, though!

Romcoms are my crack, I effing love them.

Love Actually, guh. I always well up at the "to me, you are perfect" scene. But it feels wrong to watch it any other time than Christmas, lmao.

Imagine Me & You, asdkfjadklsfjl! Probably in my top 5 movies ever.

I'd like to see #11 for Angie but I don't think I can stop wanting to punch Charlie Sheen in the face for long enough. Meh.

Love Actually has so many fabulous lines! For some reason, Natalie's "Where the fuck is my fucking coat??" always makes me titter inappropriately, although it's not really that funny-funny.

Imagine Me & You, asdkfjadklsfjl! Probably in my top 5 movies ever.

DITTO.

I don't think I can stop wanting to punch Charlie Sheen in the face for long enough.

That movie is so problematic! Maybe it's, indeed, Angie, but Charlie Sheen doesn't annoy me half as much in it. That's the only reason I've been able to watch it over and over again.
