So, it's time for the Olympics again and I feel very blah & strangely ambivalent about the whole thing. I'm all for team sports, though, and, oddly enough, I'm very much obsessed with handball (!) at the moment. Yeah, don't ask me why; I just suddenly found myself reading through the 10,000+ comment-long
AE handball thread a while back.
Anyway, the result? Utter infatuation with Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg, a couple who both play for Norway's national team, as well as for Ikast on a national series level (Toms Ligan in Denmark). And when I found out that Nyberg's actually from Finland (she became a Norwegian citizen so that she could play in a team that succeeds -> Norway), much squeeing was involved.
Conclusion: Hot lesbians and adorableness. Picspam is required.
Point #1: Gro Hammerseng
The same way Meryl Streep is said to be the greatest living actress, Gro Hammerseng is said to be the best female handball player in the world at the moment. And she really is magnificent; you only need to see her play for five minutes and you'll know she's incredibly good.
And then there's the fact that she's also hot. Insanely hot.
Hammerseng is the captain of Norway's national team with a nearly 7-goal average per match, which is rather incredible.
Point #2: Katja Nyberg
Like I mentioned, Katja Nyberg's originally from Espoo, Finland. Her father was Finland's first professional handball player. She's been a Norwegian citizen for seven years and, alongside Hammerseng, is one of Norway's (and Ikast's) key players.
Point #3: Hot Lesbians Playing Handball. What More Do You Want?
Hammerseng & Nyberg have been together for 2,5 years, and they live together in Ikast, Denmark. They don't even try to hide their relationship from anyone, but they refuse to talk about their private life in the media.
However, like we all know, a picture says more than a thousand words. So, here's 18,000+ words for you:
This following pic wouldn't be half as cute if Katja wasn't drinking from Gro's water bottle (see the label).
During Euro2006 (I think) Katja was injured and couldn't really play. Nevertheless she was always next to Gro; in the following pic Gro's stretching while Katja simply sits on the floor, holding her hand. ♥
And, naturally, Katja's there after the game.
Cuteness. Let me show you it:
It's so hot that these two are basically Norway's/Ikast's best players.
They also have a ritual: everytime after a game, they hug. It is incredibly adorable.
A fellow teammate has said that "[Gro and Katja] are always together. And when they aren't, they're counting the hours till they are." I'm dying of cuteness.
Need moving picture to convince you? Go no further!
Norway won an important game in the Euro2006, Gro was awesome, Katja couldn't play and sat in the audience. But Gro still managed to express her undying love for the brunette. You don't need to understand Norwegian, because the hand gestures are pretty much universal:

GUH. THEIR LOVE IS SO PURE AND PERFECT.
Handball, my favourite new sports obsession. So many pretty people! Really, every Norwegian player is hot or cute. Apart from the two above, I have a particularly soft spot for Katrine Lunde Haraldsen, their No.1 goal keeper. She's
adorable. And
a fantastic goalie.
So far Norway has played wonderfully in the Olympics; two matches and two wins - granted, the opposing teams (China & Angola) haven't been ranked very high. The next game will be against Kazakhstan on Wednesday, and that match should already be a bit tougher than the first two. Exciting, for real!
And while I'm on the subject, yay for Finland winning its first gold medal in Beijing! Shooting = not my thing. But that was awesome, I have to admit.
Oy. I can't believe I wrote an entire entry about sports. So very butch and...something.
