Divisadero: Notes

Back to Part Three

Notes

+ I was intrigued by the idea of adapting Ondaatje's novel Divisadero into a fanfic, especially because it contains a critical scene in which a pseudo-incestuous (one of them is adopted) couple is caught having sex by their father. However, there was no space in this story to take the focus away from Sam and Dean, and when I recently re-read The English Patient, I fell in love all over again with the tragedy of a man having to leave his injured lover in a cave, and of not being able to get back in time to save her life.

+ Hana is stolen from Michael Ondaatje's novel The English Patient (and is played by Juliette Binoche in the film adaptation). This is her:

I couldn't list Hana as a crossover character though, since in the book, she's an army nurse during the Second World War. I loved the idea of looking at Sam through the eyes of a character who is just as damaged as he is, and who can relate to him because they share a sense of loss. (I imagine that she and Amelia will end up together, because both women are hot and I'm shallow.)

+ The book about the Gold Rush, which contains the sentence quoted in the story about an incident in which two brothers kill each other arguing about which direction to travel in, is from Divisadero, as is the question 'which historical period would you choose to live in'.

+ The garden that Sam paints on the walls for Amelia is inspired by the painted garden on the patient's walls in The English Patient. I love that the garden Sam and Dean see in 'Dark Side of the Moon' is based on a school trip they went on as kids, and I imagine that Sam is subconsciously reminded of his shared Heaven with Dean when he looks at gardens (and that perhaps Amelia also finds peace by looking at gardens, maybe because she's seen Heaven's garden in a vision or something).

Thank you for reading. ♥
