I'm not planning to watch the new episodes until they're on DVD and available for free at the library. However, we've been watching the GG marathon on and off on the UP Channel. UP used to be the Gospel Music Channel, until it branched out into bad dramas and appalling Christmas movies. Get this: the episodes are censored. Damn, hell, asshole, etc.--all are bleeped out. Even the commercials are sickly sweet.

I'd forgotten how soapy the show was. Also how mean the writers were to the characters.

Haha, wow. It's been so long since I actually watched anything on TV that I'd forgotten that censored episodes are a thing. It used to weird me out to watch X-Files reruns on one particular channel that kept cutting out the gory parts with creature entrails and stuff.

I agree! Whenever I rewatch it I marvel at how bad some of it actually is. I'll always love Lorelai and Rory's relationship, though.

Ha ha. The X-Files is better when it scares you without showing the gore.

Lorelei and Rory's relationship is the center of the series for sure. It's positioned as a drama/comedy hybrid but the family dynamics are pretty tragic when you think about it: a sixteen year who is so desperately unhappy that she runs away with her infant child and doesn't have a relationship with her own mother for what, 15 years? It's nearly inconceivable because I relied on my own mother so heavily when our son was born.

We have the first few seasons on DVD somewhere... I might dig out season one. It was my favorite by far.

It is! I always thought they showed too much at times. But even with the occasional overkill it's still so much better than some current shows.

Yes, there's so much angst at the heart of the show! I love Emily to bits and I love that no one's painted as a villain. Even from the first episode, when Emily bargains for more time with Lorelai and Rory, it's so clear that Lorelai's parents are still hurting from what happened in the past.

S1 is totally my favourite too. <3 I rewatched the first half while waiting for the miniseries, and I still adore it.

Oh God, I didn't know that it used to be a gospel music channel, but now that I know that, it totally makes sense. I HATE the bleeped out words. It screwed with the flow of the episodes (I was watching the marathon throughout the week, too).
