Yesterday was the day I went to examine the oft-fabled collection of records previously
alluded to here. It was in the tiny town of Ridge Spring, South Carolina in a house that is largely full of junk. Most of the items of junk are LPs from a collection that was given to the house's owner (let's call him Charlie, because that's his name).
My mission was to examine the collection and determine if it was worth my time and money to bring it back to Atlanta to sell for some sort of commission. While perusing the 5000 or so records of the collection that were in the house, it became increasingly evident that it would not be worth it. In the process, however, I did manage to cull about 40 records that I wanted for myself; for those I gave him $50.
Highlights of the list include:
- The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! Debut album, promo, good condition.
- DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince Girls Ain't Nothin' But Trouble, original 12" on Word Up
- Sister Sledge We Are Family LP, two copies, featuring He's the Greatest Dancer and of course the title track.
- ... several other disco singles. I love disco now. Why?
Altogether not a bad haul, but was it worth driving 8 hours? Probably not. I still had to do it, though, in case this guy was sitting on a goldmine. Apparently he has an eccentric friend who has been holding a lot more of the same collection for years, and those records are apparently have more "African-American music" which sounds exactly like what I want. So another trip may be in the works, and he seemed excited at the prospect of me bringing friends.
I think soon I may need another one of
these. Oh man, someone stop me.
