Part 1 of my take of "Fandom Apocalypse"

Hhhmn. I make a visit to fandom just as the shit hits the fan. Typical.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on. I have sort of a vague idea, something about children being exposed to dangerous subjects, irony of ironies. I'm not going to throw my lot in with anyone until this becomes a bit more clear. I don't think that Six Apart's--The Man's-- ( Read more... )

It has been a really weird couple of days. It's been rather strange seeing normally very sane people completely flip out.

I can sort of understand LJ's POV - though I agree with you that it was entirely financially motivated, considering their previous reluctance to take any action at all when paedos and the like were reported to LJAbuse - but their execution was abominable.

I will admit I cleaned my interests list for anything that might cause objections (even "pretty boys kissing", just in case LJ thought I meant the wrong sort of boy...), and backed up my LJ - had been meaning to do that for months and months anyway. Am glad it's all blowing over now, however. The seven-day plan some fans were suggesting made me nearly wet myself at how ludicrous it got in places.

I guess the apology statement they issued is probably the best we could hope for, taking into account the legal advice they're no doubt getting, and the pressure from advertisers. I'm willing to accept it as I'm a believer in second chances...though I admit I'm now definitely decided against ever buying a permanent account. But I'll keep paying up my regular account, I suspect.

(So you really meant it about being 17? So that means you were like, 13, back when I started out in fandom? Seriously? Dude... I wish I could write like that when I was 13. I was too preoccupied with dreadful Mary Sue Star Trek fanfic where I hooked up Captain Me with my first officer and all my favourite characters...)

By the way, is that you in your icon? You're cute! :)
