I remember when...

Livejournal was a place to catch up on what was going on in my friends lives. It was a place to hear good news and bad news and to know what was important to the people I care about. Those days are gone. Livejournal has become a forum for people to whimper and whine when the political situation was not going their way and to gloat when it is. I ( Read more... )

I don't know what to say to this, really, or at least I don't know what I can say that will actually mean anything to you. Erik has already made some eloquent points about my general reasons for posting about political issues on my journal, and to that I will simply add that I'm deeply saddened that you feel as though our differing political positions mean we can't be friends any more.

I will understand if you choose to ignore this comment, and I wish you and Joe well for the future.

I don't dislike you or anyone else. I recognise that everyone has a right to their political beliefs and to be honest the politics is only a small part of the issue right now. I'm just very very tired of being convenient. I want to see people when they don't need anything from me. I want to be able to walk into a room with my husband and not face an uncomforatable silence. I want to know that my friends really are my friends and that I am not just a person to call on in a crisis. There are many people out there about whome I do not feel this way, but there are many people I do. It's hard right now, but I'm not trying to alienate anyone. I'm just saying that I would like to be called when it isn't about what I can do for people. I would like to know that people just want to hang out with me.

These desires are all totally understandable and human and valid. And I'm sorry you feel that way. And I'm not sure what I can do about it except to offer the assurance that, well, we absolutely considered you included in the invites we've sent out across various channels for Thanksgiving.

The invitation still stands. We're not going to tell you you're not welcome in our household because your politics differ from ours, because that's blatantly not true, and we don't work that way. And this is true not only for Thanksgiving but also for poker or anything else we organize. We haven't done anything in a while, but, well, things have been kinda chaotic around here, y'know?

I appreciate that. We are going to be having company ourselves on Thanksgiving, which is why we did not rsvp for the Waif's meal. I appreciate the invite though.
