You've hit one of the reasons I haunt farmer's markets so much, I want the businesses to survive. My purchases might not make much a difference, but at least I'm trying.
Yes, farmers markets are becoming really popular here too! And there is something nice about seeing the people who actually make the produce face to face. Plus you know your money is going straight to them, not through a middleman. That personal interaction can be financially and emotionally rewarding for both buyer and seller.
I still read manga, mostly buying the omnibus editions that Viz is putting out. It seems like only Viz is a steady publisher these days. Manga and animé were always going to be a niche product. I buy less than before but do pick up my favourite series. It's probably like that for most fans.
I've seen those CLAMP omnibus editions and the lovely colour extras...and the prices! If I'd known they were coming out, I would never have bothered with individual volumes. I wish publishers had thought of it sooner - but maybe price was a factor. I guess smaller volumes are a good way of testing the popularity of a series.
I'm currently collecting the X volumes and I can say they're great. XXXholic is coming next year and I plan to buy it since I haven't read that series yet. So far, it seems only the super popular series like Clamp, Rurouni Kenshin, and Sailor Moon are getting the deluxe omnibus treatment.
