(Bah, I had a much better version of this post drafted, but LJ appears to have lost it.)
Having regular HIV tests makes Scarlett Johansen a "stupid tart" who
"falls on her back at the slightest hint from any random berk in trousers", apparently.
Never mind that the Telegraph article says she "works really hard" to keep her relationships monogamous. Never mind that she might not be the smartest cookie in the box. Never mind that she's probably been screwed over a lot by men in her short life (the implication in the article is that she's taking tests because she doesn't trust her boyfriends, not that she's sleeping around). Here is a woman who is being honest about her sex life, honest about the fact that mistakes can happen, honest about taking responsibility for her own actions.
And still, the reaction from certain quarters is, OMG STFU U HOR.
I realise that there's a fine line between encouraging women to embrace their sexuality and putting pressure on them to sleep with anyone who asks. I've made my fair share of mistakes, and I'm still pretty bitter about some of them. But most of all, I'm bitter about the fact that women are still embarrassed by their sexuality, and that women are so often the ones putting other women down sexually.
When will we ever get past this?
