My first love.
Now, you see, that must be a loaded question. The first time I said I Love You and thought I meant it I was prompted by a suicide attempt, clinging to my significant other as I thought he was saying his final goodbye over IM.
It turned out that I had not only felt cheated out of it later, had the words dragged out of me as I sat sobbing in front of my computer screen, but the attempt was faked. An elaborate lie, topped by me calling 911 and his state trooper parents being notified. It wasn't love, not really, and never was.
So I can say, perhaps, that my first love was an idea, an abstract personification, a fleeting image that I kept grabbing at but missing every time. Yet, I prefer to think that My First Love is still coming, and will be heart-stopping, mind-boggling, world-turning love when it gets here.
