i promised i'd share, but i'm not in a great frame of mind right now, which means this won't sound nearly as exciting as it was. maybe if you catch me on a better day, i can explain this better if you want.
so the dead 60s left. my ears were bleeding (but of course, not really). i was excited. the crowd was becoming more drunkenly belligerent (sp?). at a quarter to ten, some annoying lady from DC101 came out to be like "woohoo, garbage! listen to our radio station. woohoo" and throw some shirts into the audience. i missed one by a hair. grr.
finally, fifteen minutes later, the lights go down so everyone starts cheering. (they teased us a few times, what with the roadies checking instruments and whatnot). johnny cash's version of "hurt" comes on. i've never actually listened to it. i remember the hullabaloo from when it came out, but i somehow managed to never hear the song. it was incredibly depressing.
almost at the end of the song, the band came out to take their places. i feel bad that i don't know their names because they are amazing artists and each one has a really cool, really unique style. it wouldn't be the same band if any of them ever quit.
oh, i forgot to mention the mic stand. shirley's mic stand was basically a giant pimp cane. it was 5 feet tall (possibly over), clear, and studded with pink translucent jewels. it was fantastic.
anyway, with just a few seconds left in the song, who should come stalking out onto the stage like a tiger about to pounce on her prey, but our god, the most beautiful woman alive, and the only celebrity i can actually say that i idolize in all aspects of her being, shirley manson.
when the lights came up, even though i was already dripping with sweat from the opening act and the sold-out crowd, i got goosebumps all over. i was fifteen, maybe twenty, feet away from her, and her very presence made all my hair stand on end. she is electrifying and magnificent and this is starting to sound really creepy, huh? heh...sorry...
she was wearing a black mini-dress, that hung really loosely. it was one of those that's open in the back and connects at the shoulders with a thin strap crossing right under the back of the neck. it had turquoise accents. she wore black fishnets and red high heels with leopard print trim at the top. her hair is long again, so it was kind of curly, kind of wavy, and it's red. and of course, she had her trademark thick black eyeliner/shadow.
she started with "queer", which i absolutely love. they played lots of amazing songs, some old, some new. i don't care what people say, i really like the stuff on the new album and need to get out somewhere to buy it.
every once in a while she'd stop to talk to the crowd between songs. she's so friendly and just loves to talk about everything. she even requested at one point a shot of whiskey which i found really amusing. she's also really good with eye contact. she makes sure to make eye contact with as many people as she can. it makes you feel kind of special. especially if she smiles while she does it. makes the whole thing more personal. she is a huge tease, too. the guitarists, when they left the stage towards the end, gave high fives and shook hands with people. but while she was singing, she would lean out over the audience so that she was so close, they could *almost* touch her. she wouldn't let them though, and it was amazing. less than an inch away. they'd reach and reach but she'd stay just far enough away. she also said at one point before she started singing..."vow", i believe it was, that they were all really happy to be performing again and felt very lucky because after the response to the last album, they thought no one would care about them anymore.
now onto the sex. i've seen them in concert before. but this time was different. they weren't opening for anyone. it was their show. when she walked out on stage, the first thing that came to mind was "she *is* the living embodiment of all that is sex" and she knows it. during "hammering in my head", which i was actually really surprised but really glad she played, she actually started having sex with an imaginary man on stage...and i could feel it in the crowd around me, everyone was just like "guh...why are none of us having sex right now???" there was another point when she was singing some lines to the bassist, who is also quite attractive for a man of his age, and it really looked to me like they were having sex with their eyes. it was so hot.
there were actual moments during the show when i thought i was going to pass out. from exertion. from excitement. from heat. i would get so dizzy, but the adrenaline kept me going. it was amazing. i loved every second of it.
when they left before the encore, everyone naturally cheered for them to come back. they're so one of those bands that's planning to give you an encore, but they want you to beg for it. when they came back on, she had changed her shoes back to the original ones (she had different ones on throughout most of the show), and i also noticed that she had put a flesh colored sports bra on. i guessed she had just gotten uncomfortable or something, but anyway, you could see the strap across the back where her dress was open.
they did another new song, and then she performed cherry lips, which someone had called into the radio station to request. funnily enough, since people didn't really like that album (so they don't perform from it a lot), she forgot the words to the first verse. it was hilarious.
then they started one of my new favorite songs, off the new album, "sex is not the enemy". and towards the end...she flashed everyone. of course, since she was wearing the bra, she didn't really flash anyone, it just looked like she did. and then out of the blue, 4 guys in police uniforms jumped up on stage and dragged her off. the band started yelling, the drummer threw one of his sticks after them, the crowd was booing. i felt bad for the people who didn't realize it was a joke. i recognized two of the "cops" as two of the roadies who had been setting up before hand.
sadly, we thought they were coming back on, so we waited for a good 10-15 minutes before we finally gave up and left.
on the way out, i saw a notice on the wall saying "Notice: This performance is being recorded for a music video production. Your presence here constitutes a waiver..." etc. etc. i saw the camera guy. i didn't know why we were being recorded. but yes. i'm going to be in a garbage video, unless the stupid guy with the big head who pushed his way in front of me blocked me out. asshole. i got mad at him at one point, so every time i jumped up, i made sure to land on him.
anyway. i need two new cds. although the dead 60s' won't come out until may 31st.
oh, that's right. on the way out, i saw the drummer, bassist, and guitarist from the dead 60s waiting outside, so i went up to talk to them. i got to shake their hands, and told them how awesome they were. they were really nice. but anyway, that's how i found out they're going to be on the vans warped tour.
ok, enough of this. if you're interested in the crazy lighting set up, let me know. i'll explain it to you later. i have to go to the work call or i'm going to fail ted's class.
