I didn't mean for my interpretation of Billy to come off as needy. Actually, it's the opposite. I think that because Billy is able to function without Joe, and is able to move on, that it means he is able to view their love for one another as strong, despite not being in the same city / band. I simply think he's stronger than Joe, and is able to deal with the separation in a much different way than Joe. And you've got me thinking about Billy's motivations now, which, I admit I hadn't when I wrote this post. I do agree that Billy wanted to move on, and that meant leaving Joe behind. That didn't mean he stopped loving Joe, as you say, and you know, I think I agree with you on the whole 'Billy is smothered' thing. I hadn't thought about it in terms of alcoholics, but you're *so right*. That *is* how Billy deals with it...he gets away from it. Their relationship is so destructive, and yet at the saem time, they both need it in this odd way.
I'm not sure that Billy would have come back at all. He *never* said he wouldn't take the contract, and certainly he and Joe fell into that easy comfortable groove they had. I don't know that he "used" Joe's feelings for him, though. Joe assumes and acts like Billy promised to stay, which he never did. He says at one point 'half time with Jenifur, but this is your real gig' (or something like that...when they're in the diner). Billy never contradicts him, but the thing is, Billy never agreed to that in the first place. Joe has just twisted it in his mind. Okay, so huh, maybe you're saying that Billy used Joe in that way through ommission rather than out and out subversion?
*rubs hands together* Okay, so now you have me totally thinking about Billy. I think the one thing I can say for sure about Billy is that a) he loves Joe. b) being in the band / not being in the band doesn't affect how he views Joe and c) Billy is trying to do something with his life that will benefit *him*.
hee, to add to this. When I say that Billy can't move on from Joe, it's more in that way where they're always tied to one another. Billy isn't going to *forget* Joe, which is what I think Joe worries about. Billy can't move on because it's just a fact of life. He's been friends with Joe all these years, and you can't just forget that kind of thing, no matter how much Joe might piss him off or smother him.
Oh, this is very true. But I don't think that'd be enough for Joe either. Billy's still *gone*. *sigh* Poor Joe. He's just never going to be satisfied.
going to sleep but must just say...serialkarmaJune 10 2004, 21:10:27 UTC
I have thougt So. Much. about Billy. I have lots of thoughts about Billy. Er. Well, those kind too.
Okay, so huh, maybe you're saying that Billy used Joe in that way through ommission rather than out and out subversion?
Yes, actually. That's just what I'm saying.(I read somewhere once that Noel Baker the screenwriter originally conceived of Billy as even more of an asshole than Callum wanted to play him. Maybe that's colored my interpretation somewhat.) I don't think Billy's above doing a lot of things to get what he wants (especially if we throw in the interpretation that suggests he made a deal with the devil. That's *ambition* man), and if it means using Joe then he will. I think he'd be sorry to hurt him, but he'd do it anyway. But in this case I think he saw Joe as the closest way to get what he wanted and went for it. And then when Jenifur ended up coming through after all, that became the closest way to get what he wanted.
I also think as he gets more comfortable with Joe again there might be a tendency to take Joe's feelings for him for granted. That's another way to deal with the resentment he might be feeling towards Joe--act like he's entitled to Joe's feelings.
