Seven songs I'm into right now and why: (in no particular order)

1. Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes - Edison Lighthouse
I've been downloading a lot of oldies recently for nostalgia purposes (as well as good music ones) and this is still one of my favorites. Everything I have by the Turtles falls into a close second (excepting The Lion Sleeps Tonight - I fucking hate that song). As a matter of fact, I had this stuck in my head all yesterday. And the day before.

2. Desperate Guys - The Faint
My housemate Ryan loves the Faint and always plays them at our dance parties. He played this song in his car one night while I was driving all three of my housemates home from a party. It was pouring, I was depressed, and Jessie was sobbing in the back seat. Somehow, I still love this song.

3. Chris Guest REMIX - David Jaberi
My friend David wrote and recorded this song. I drew the art for his first self-released demo. I like most of the songs on it a lot (they're catchy and very singable) but this is the longest and most developed. It also has a good story behind it.

4. Coconut Grove - The Lovin' Spoonfull
This has been on in my top five beloved songs for over a year now. It's a total anomaly on the disk it's from (Hums of the Lovin' Spoonfull) but is still the most relaxing track I've heard in a long time, from anybody. The other Lovin' Spoonfull song I really like is What A Day For A Daydream, which makes me happy. Coconut Grove is the only song I know that almost makes me cry by being the epitome of pleasant.

5. Birdo - Josephine Foster and the Supposed
Josephine Foster reminds me of what Joanna Newsom might have sounded like if she wasn't making music in the 21st century. This is a really beautiful song.

6. Lida Rose and Will I Ever Tell You? - Shirley Jones and The Buffalo Bills
This is a song off the soundtrack to the Music Man. The first part is the Buffalo Bills, a barbershop quartet, singing Lida Rose (one of my favorite songs on it's own - I sing it all the time at work) and then Shirley Jones sings Will I Ever Tell You? which I still suspect is the origin for the brand name "Sweet and Low". After both parts are sung individually they overlap, and it is the sweetest, most poignant and beautiful sound. This song reminds me of how much I love musicals. Shut up.

7. Breakfast In Bed - Dusty Springfield
Aretha Franklin once passed Dusty Springfield in and elevator and said, "You go, girl". This song is about a man who is sad because his girlfriend was a bitch again, and Dusty Springfield invites him to her house again to make him feel better. Best line ever: "You don't have to say you love me". (It's contextual.) I wonder why this guy's girlfriend was a being a bitch? Regardless of her shameless hussy status in this song, Dusty manages to sound innocent and inviting. I love you, Dusty Springfield. Another good song on this CD (Dusty in Memphis) is about her growing up on a farm and falling in love with a black guy, which doesn't matter because they live on a farm.
