Had dinner at the fullerton in the town restaurant and it was really a let-down.
Maybe it was the wrong day or something, but almost everything was bad.
Oh sure, the setting was wonderful, it was grand. After all, its the bloody fullerton hotel! At least the ambience has to be something yar?!
None of the food was top-notch befitting such a grand hotel. Errr, let me amend that, It was all a hundred notches down from top. At best, some of the food was average, most of it was below-average, and the rest of the dining experience just stank.
Thank goodness I was wined and dined by a prospective employer, so I didn't have to pay a single cent, but I would have raised hell if I had to pay so much for food so terribly plain.
First peeve, service was really bad. The waitress who showed us our table promptly disappeared even before we sat, without giving us the menu even though she was carrying them!! Maybe she heard that both of us were having the buffet, but actually only I was. Notwithstanding that, it took nearly another 5 minutes before we got the menu, and that was only after accosting one of the wait staff. Later on it was just chaos, no one came to take our orders (we needed to kidnap another waiter for that), the supervisor/ manager was surly and didn't know how to pour beer. My chardonnay didn't taste like chardonnay at all, heck, it was probably twice-removed from any wine! Surprisingly, only the bill came with alacrity. Maybe they were being merciful and trying to shorten the terrible dining experience for us..
The food was equally sad. The sashimi was average, not sweet at all, but at least it was fresh. The rest of the japanese counter was average, nothing to shout about. The buffet appetisers were quite pathetic, most of it consisted of salmon dishes - salmon shooters (???), smoked salmon, salmon salad with tomatoes etc., and it tasted as though it was all prepacked or processed food. For lack of imagination, I didn't know if it was "Eat Salmon" day. The mains were equally pathetic and honestly quite forgettable. The drunken prawns weren't drunk at all, it should be renamed "Herb-to-death prawns", the sauteed fish was overcooked - hard and dry, the sweet and sour fish couldn't compare to most zhi cha hawkers'. Even the white rice was overcooked and dry, some bits were actually crunchy! Only the sea cucumber was actually quite nice. The raw oysters were barely fresh, and the rest of the shellfish were tough and tasteless. The dessert counter did look fairly decent but after my disappointing experience with the food, I have already decided to just go home and enjoy my tub of ben and jerry's ice cream. I did try the longan dessert, unfortunately for me it didn't have any longan in it and didn't taste of longan at all, even if it was just "longan soup"!
The curry chicken that my dining companion ordered wasn't too bad, a tad oily, lacked ooomph and you could tell that they cooked the chicken, potato and the curry separately then just threw everything into the claypot before it reached the diners, ie. the chicken and potato had no curry taste. The really good thing about that dish? The papadams that came with the white rice was crispy and fragrant, and not oily.
About the only thing vaguely comforting as food in that whole place was the bread, it was the only thing fairly decent to munch on and NOT disappointing.. but then again how can you fuck up bread, butter and water?! Yeah, so that actually constituted about 75% of my dinner at the town restaurant.
I won't recommend this place to anyone unless all you plan to do is stare at the grand surroundings and eat bread, butter and water.
Food: 4/10
