New Nordschleife Lap Record

Jun 04, 2007 10:50

For the first time since 1976, an F1 car ran the Nuurberring earlier this year. During an event called "Experience BMW Motorsport", Nick Heidfeld clocked an unofficial 5:59 (beating the previous record of 6:11, set in 1983 in a Le Mans type car).

The reason why this is interesting is that it's not only the first time an F1 car has run there in 31 years, but the fisrt time any 1st class race car has run there since 1983, when top class racing was completely removed from the long circut.

The track remains, when it is not being used for events like this one, open to traffic, officially called a "toll road". The fee is 10 euro.
