And the rewatch continues…months later. But yeah, don’t judge me for that. Episode seven and eight were skipped over because I can’t find the disk. This was also done while sick on the couch, so if doesn’t make sense, that’s probably why.
Probably anyways.
1x09 Rogue
+I’m still loving how unsubtle Lex is about trying to fix up Lana and Clark. He is capable of subtlety but he doesn’t seem to care here. And it just makes me laugh.
+The introduction of Victoria. I actually loved Victoria’s character, a foil and piece of Lex’s past all in one, with romantic entanglements. It’s everything that I could ask for. (Well that’s not Chlex anyways.) The two of them using and playing each other and being aware of it at the same time. And it’s a wonderful look at someone else who grew up just like Lex, trying to gain her father’s approval and look out for herself all at the same time. The cop is another great reminder of who Lex once was, something the show eventually seemed to forget. I wish they had explored his bad boy days, full of drunken mistakes and things that needed covering up more.
+When Chloe gets the Torch taken away from her, the look on her face. I just want to reach through the screen and hug her. Or make one of the boys or Lana do it for me. She’s not even sure what happened, Pete has to spell it out for her. But I do love that it’s Lana that offers to help, that she doesn’t know what she’s going to do, but she’s going to do something to help her friend. To fix it, because she knows how much the paper means to Chloe. The beginning of the Chloe and Lana friendship was just so beautifully done and had so little to do with Clark in the overall sense. I wish we had gotten more of that.
+I LOVE Clark’s reaction to being threatened into doing things. I like that as much as Clark is this gentle, sweet guy, who just wants to play football and get the girl, he’s no pushover when it comes to the big stuff. And he’s quite intimidating when he wants to be. He grabs that guy’s hand and uses just enough force to make his point and stares him right in the eye as he tells him he’ll never do anything for him. This isn’t shy, shifty-eyed Clark Kent. This is Clark Kent, full of power and will not be used. By anyone.
+ “I don’t think a rational adult drops a generator on top a teenage boy.” Jonathan, in a sentence that most people would say. But it’s very true. Don’t trust a guy who takes that kind of a risk.
+I have a lot of problems with Jonathan’s character in general, his treatment of Lex and sometimes his treatment of Clark as well. But this episode showcases where some of his deep seeded trust issues come from. A cop, someone who is supposed to be trust worthy and on the right side of the law, comes in and tries to use his son, threatens to expose him to the world. This is what Jonathan’s been fearing for years now and its coming true. (And it won’t be the last time it happens either.) But Jonathan doesn’t budge, Clark (and Martha) are his priority and he will not let anyone hurt them. No matter what he has to do to stop it. It’s a very consistent part of his character.
+ “You know what the weirdest part is, for a millisecond, I almost thought you were my friend.” -Chloe to Lana. Such a wonderfully acted scene. Again, Chloe’s face just crumpling, because not only is the Torch getting taken away from her, it’s given to Lana. Who never asked for it, but still got it anyways, and Chloe’s had to watch that exact same thing happen with Clark. Lana never asked for his attention, but she still got it anyways. It’s driven on emotion and not fact, Chloe getting almost everything important to her ripped away and handed to Lana. It’s a very true to your teenage years moment. Act first, think later.
+I like that Clark’s first attempt to handle things on his own fails. He’s fifteen and for all his powers, he’s still young and naïve and thinks the world should be a fair place at the end of the day. He’s Clark Kent, the poster boy for choosing the right thing and path. But it doesn’t work. Detective guy (who I can’t figure out how his name is supposed to be spelled) beats him. He not only gets out of the set up Clark caused, he sets up Jonathan to take the fall for a murder he probably committed. Like Jonathan (and Lex) tells him, Clark’s playing the detective’s game and he doesn’t know any of the rules. He’s not built that way. But obviously, Clark ultimately wins, because the Detective gets greedy and doesn’t think it all the way through. Clark with all his powers will always have an escape plan, will always be able to get away. He doesn’t have that same luxury.
-Lana, oh wonderful Lana. This is one of our first hints of manipulative Lana imo. She did exactly what Kwan asked, but she twisted it around on him, used his own words against him. And Kwan realizes that it’s not just Chloe he has to worry about. And Lana and Chloe have a heart to heart (with wonderful close up shots that they should have used more often. KK and AM are so pretty to look at.) and Chloe admits that she was wrong to freak out on her and explains why she did. And Lana accepts her apology and the two come to an understanding. Lana wants to be Chloe’s friend and Chloe wants that too. I also like that Lana struggled with running the paper on her own (Clark shows this later in the season too), it’s hard and Chloe devotes most of her time to it, with very little help. She should get more credit for that.
1x10 Shimmer
+And this would be the first of many almost moments between Clark and Lana. They got so close, but life got in the way again. Life always gets in the way. Nell interrupts and Whitney’s father is sick, and Clark can’t be that guy. Still there scenes are sweet. I think S1 Clana might be my favorite Clana, they’re still young, they’re struggling to find out who they are and what they want (if being together is one of those things) and there is a legit obstacle other than his secret getting in the way of them being together. That was ground that should have only be covered so much.
+I like that again we see Lana doing something, running the blood drive, and trying to figure out who she wants to be. It’s a very little aspect of the episode, but important character trait, that she’s still searching. It also ties into later, when she’s trying to find charities to be a part of and help out in season six.
+Again, still loving all the Victoria stuff in this episode. How Lex is so clear about what their relationship is (“we’re playing chess”). It just makes me happy. I wish we had gotten few more relationships like this for him, even short lived ones.
+I love Chloe’s fascination with the ‘Luthor Mansion poltergeist’, that she’s the one Clark goes to with it all. I mean it’s happening in Lex’s house and she’s still the one he goes to. I like that he recognizes Chloe is pretty much the smartest person in Smallville when it comes to anything like this. I also love her reaction when her fingers disappear. Makes me giggle.
+I feel bad for Jeff and Amy’s parents. It was a bad day for them. They find out their daughter was stalking their boss and get let go for obvious reasons and then their son tries to kill somebody (more than once). It’s just a bad bad day for them.
+I like all the information we got on Lex’s mother in this one, in it showing how much she meant to him and he meant to her. It also puts a whole other spin on everything we learn later. Lillian was not the mother he paints her as, but he still holds onto that image in his mind anyways.
1x11 Hug
+And this is the first time we see Clark and Lana disagreeing. She’s taking Whitney’s side, who she has no real reason to disbelieve. She doesn’t know what happened in the woods, but she knows Whitney is telling the truth when he says he saw Kyle swinging the bat at him. And Whitney doesn’t know any more than she does that there’s a whole lot more going on there. I wish there was a bit more of this throughout the earlier seasons that the writers let them disagree with each other about things that had nothing to do with each other personally.
+ “Where you going?” -Lex
“Jail.” -Clark. The way he says it just makes me giggle. Like, obviously that’s where he’s going.
+I love that Lex has a guy who takes care of all medical needs discreetly. I mean, of course he does. Why would he? And a hint of things to come with him mentioning Club Zero and Lex’s knife wound. That’s bound to lead to some questions.
+I like the nice little group meeting of Clark, Chloe, and Lex. There should have been far more of them. The fact that she’s the brains, the one who figured out how they knew each other, stands out to me (and I think to Lex as well. Clark is just used to it by this point). And the little smile he gives her when she asks about them knowing where Kyle is. I love it. All Chloe/Lex interaction is wonderful.
+I still like the scene, the line “and why is my mouth minty?” is funny to me (Allison delivers it just perfectly). BUT, being older now, I can see a lot more consent issues that SV really ignores all around in a lot of different episodes. Yes, Chloe agreed to let Kyle use his powers on her. But the kiss involved her and Clark and had a sexual component. And it really calls up the idea of what someone with that power could do without every actually addressing it. It’s not just that they could kill someone or make someone else kill someone. It’s that they could use it to get anyone they wanted to be with them, whether they actually wanted to or not. And it’s just, why get so close to the subject, if you’re not going to fully address it.
+ “Our friendship is going to be the stuff of legends.” Oh Lex, you just jinxed yourself so bad. You jinxed everything.
