With all of my time spent in fandom, whenever I listen to music it’s not long before I assign a character or ship or fandom to it, that I think it fits just perfectly for. It only took a couple of times listening to this song before I quickly decided it might as well be Caroline Forbes anthem.
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth
Caroline was always a dreamer, she had plans, knew the things she wanted in life. She wanted her parents to be proud of her, wanted to be Miss Mystic Falls, wanted to be popular and remembered. She had a life planned out for herself, a future. She was still figuring all of that out when it got ripped away from her in the hospital when Katherine used her to send a message and smothered her with a pillow. That was not the end of her life, but it was the end of the life she had imagined. No more husband, no more children, no growing old. The things she had always wanted, that she was so close to grasping, were now out of her reach and she could never get them back.
Life goes on
It gets so heavy
Life only got harder for Caroline after she was turned. She was suddenly thrust into a world that she knew so little about, where everyone she loved was in danger, where her mother didn’t accept her for what she was, where her parents hunted her kind. She had to give up the boy she loved in order to protect him and she constantly had to fight suppress her instincts as a vampire. And she had to do so much of this on her own, with no one to really confide in.
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear, a waterfall
For me, the line the wheel breaks the butterfly, fits so incredibly well for Caroline. She was always such a vibrant person, always projecting a beautiful and happy persona, always trying to be her best in everything. But life seems like it’s always trying to break her, to take that away from her. Damon manipulated her, abused her, left her feeling like she was worthless. Matt didn’t understand her, she was always constantly living in Elena’s shadow, and she never felt connected to her mother. Katherine killed her and they she was forced to endure her presence and constant threats. She was tortured by those she cared about, her father trying to fix her and a monster wearing the face of Alaric, a man she had once respected and cared for.
And yet, despite all of this Caroline gets up and moves on.
So lying underneath those stormy skies.
She said oh, I know the sun must set to rise
Caroline, in my opinion, is one of the strongest characters on the show. So much bad has happened to her in such a short amount of time, at such a young age but she never lets it hold her down. She does her best to move on, to be optimistic, to remember that as much as there is out in the world, there is also good. She is always the one encouraging her friends, supporting them, and trying to make them happy. She knows that she can no longer have the future she once imagined, and she hates that, but she still fights for a future just the same.
