I love you.

Tyler’s voice was still repeating in her head as he kissed his way down her neck. For one minute Caroline had thought that maybe, just maybe, something good way actually going to come out of this day. This horrible day, that had only served to remind her of everything that was bad in her life, of everything she could never have.

She should have known better. (It was her life after all.)

Tyler’s words were still running through her head as his teeth sunk into her skin.

---

Elena had told her about what had happened with Rose; the agony she went through, the pain that never let up, never went away, that made her beg Damon to kill her. She had cried as she told her and Caroline had cried with her, because no one deserved that.

Elena’s stories had not prepared her for this. The pain of her flesh burning away bit by bit. Her blood boiling underneath her skin. She didn’t understand how such a little bite could cause so much damage.

She tried to breathe through it, tried to fight through the pain, to be strong like Stefan had once promised her she was capable of. But she couldn’t even make it off the ground, couldn’t force herself to move, to do anything more than whimper.

She was going to die there alone, with no one even knowing that they should come looking for her.

She was going to die. And this time she wouldn’t wake up from it.

---

There were footsteps. They were loud, too loud for her sensitive ears, but she knew they were still far away. Too far away to see her. Too far away to save her.

“Care Bear?”

“Daddy?”

He was crouched down in front of her, peering at her with worried eyes, the same way he did when she was eight and she had fallen off her bike and skinned both her knees.

“It hurts Daddy, it hurts so bad.”

His hand reached out grazing her hair, like he was trying to grasp something that wasn’t there anymore.

“I know it does Caroline, but this is what you deserve.”

---

Matt’s face swam in front of her, as she felt his hands against her face, his thumbs running down her cheeks.

“Come on Caroline, stay with me.”

His hands moved down to her arms, trying to pull her up, trying to bring her to attention. His hand grazed her shoulder and she cried out.

“Care?”

He moved her jacket away, revealing the ugly mark, and Caroline wanted to run away from him, didn’t want him to see it. Didn’t want anyone to see it.

“Oh my god. What did Tyler do?”

“He told me he loved me.” Caroline whispered.

She should have run away after he said it. Should have known something like this would have happened. Nothing in her life had taught her that love would end well.

---

Matt leaned over her as he tried to fasten her seat belt. (She didn’t know why he bothered, she was dead anyways.) She could feel every time he touched her, every part of him that grazed her skin. She felt it just like she felt her dad touch her hair.

“Are you real?”

He pulled back, looking so very confused. Like maybe she was the hallucination and not him.

She kind of hoped she was.

---

Matt’s arms were around her and she wanted to pull away, wanted to make him stop touching her. But she couldn’t make it on her own and he was all she had. He was walking, moving quickly, and she could hear him talking but she didn’t know what he was saying, could only make out the sound of his heart. The sound of his blood rushing through his veins.

It was so tempting, so very tempting, and she couldn’t stop thinking about how it would make her feel better. How maybe, just maybe, it could make the pain stop.

He put her down, took the temptation away, and the pain forced itself back in. She cried out and her mother was there, hovering above her, looking at her like she knew what she was thinking. Like she knew how much she had wanted to make the pain go away, how much she had wanted to tear in to Matt’s throat, to drink him dry.

“I’m sorry, Mommy.” Caroline sobbed.

She didn’t want her to look at her the same way her father did.

---

She dreamt of Katherine. Of the night her life ended and began again. Of Elena’s face being the last thing she saw, Katherine’s words ringing in her ears before all she knew was silence.

It hadn’t been about her, it still wasn’t about her. She was just a message, a show of power. It was never about her.

She woke up screaming.

---

Beware of devils baring gifts. (Or maybe it was promises, Caroline could never remember which.)

Klaus had offered her both. Had stood in her room and whispered promises of a life she never thought she could have, of a dream that she thought was just that. Had offered her his blood, saved her life.

He was to blame for where she was, he had been the one to turn Tyler (into a hybrid, into a different person). Her bite could be directly traced back to him. Everything bad could be directly linked to him. And yet he had saved her.

The devil himself had been her savior. (She didn’t know what to think about that.)

---

Caroline had grown up loving the spotlight, had strived to always be in. To be considered special, to be called beautiful, to be someone.

She rarely felt like she was.

Staring down at the bracelet Klaus had left at her bedside, Tyler’s words still ringing in her ears, she finally saw the downside of it all.
