Being a Baker Backer

Jul 20, 2009 19:42

I wanted nothing more that to come home and sleep today. After nodding off at the computer when I got home I actually did just that. However I had to be up at 6pm so that I could go down to Vernie's and support Ray in his effort to run for City Council.

Bo got me up at 6 on the dot, which was when we were supposed to be down there, but there was no need to be on time (since it was a casual gathering). We arrived around 6:15 and found a small group in the meeting room. To my surprise "light snacks" meant pizza, cookies and soda. :D

We got some pizza and ended up sitting at the end of the table closest to Ray. He was having everyone go introduce themselves in turn and say why they were there. I was next to last (Bo was last) because we came in later. I introduced myself and kept it short. Naturally Ray wouldn't let that go. He had to tell everyone the story of how I helped him keep his business going by getting him equipment when his was taken from him (he said broken but we both know that they took it from him and ported it 200 miles away!).

After introductions Ray launched into his speech. I was surprised at who was there. Two people whom I would call stuffed shirts almost. One is the candidate he ran against the last two times and one is someone who seemed to be both for and against him. O_o Some of the others included a coworker, his middle child, his uncle and a lady from KLTV.

The meeting went on through 7:15, which was longer than he had told me it would. That's fine though because he got some great pointers on how to run and what he could do to get his word out. I don't know that he will take any of it but he got the advice. :D

When the meeting was over we were encouraged to take the leftover pizza and cookies home. So I figured it could be dinner for the next night. :D I got to talk with Richard a little too (I haven't talked with him in a while and thought he had moved). I talked with Ray for a little bit before heading out and I got some clarification on the tattoo he wants me to create for him. After that we headed home.

It was good to see Ray again and support him in his efforts to change the city.
