So I called Les Schwab first thing this morning and it almost seemed like I might have to wait a few days because they wanted to look the car over first and then schedule the work. As it turned out that wasn't necessary and they would be able to fix it before the end of the day (around 4pm).
They called me back about 9am with an estimate of $440 for the breaks and rotors. The rotors would have to be replaced because there were already grooves in them. Then the guy talked to me about some other problems they found. Apparently the pinion on my steering column is going bad and will need to be replaced. That requires and alignment when finished. Add another $160 for that. I gave the go ahead but was still wondering how I was going to pay for it all (even with my account).
About an hour later the guy called me back saying that he thought he might be able to save me some money by machining the rotors. That's usually what they do in cases with replacing brake pads but when the pads come off and the rivets leave grooves it's usually impossible to machine down and keep a good thickness. Apparently because I was good to not use the main brakes much once the pads came off the grooves weren't too bad and he though he could keep them in spec. I asked him to please try if at all possible. He said that everything should be done today and that the alignment wouldn't be until about 3:30 but I should have my car back by 4pm.
Thankfully Bo drove me around for work and lunch. As we came home I noticed my car was in the bay being worked on when we passed by. I waited at home and 4pm came and went. Around 4:30 I called and they had the car ready. I don't know why they didn't call me.
I got down there and the total came to $550. That was under the original quoted price of something like $660. I am guessing they were able to machine the rotors, though no one really said that. I made sure they put the bill on my account (because the woman I talked with in the morning apparently didn't tell anyone) and headed home. They told me there would be a 100 mile breaking in period. I was amused because I knew I would be breaking them in within only a few hours. It was good to get my car back all in all. I really miss the freedom when I have to rely on others for transportation. -_-
