movie review

i went and saw In The Loop yesterday. i now have an irrational hatred of Scotsmen.

it's not a "hilarious miscommunications" comedy, it's a "wag the dog" semi-tragedy. there's a few laughs in there, sure, but you're not laughing at anything funny that's being done or said; you're laughing at how unimaginably goddamn STUPID the characters are written to be. they're laughs of incredulity at how socially uncomfortable you'd be to be anywhere near such morons, not really at the morons' actual antics.

no heroes in this movie, nor any heroics either. full of bumbling incompetent idiots doing what they do for purely selfish reasons; the only characters who even try to think of any greater good get screwed over for it. even the villains are aggressively incompetent fools, just with egoes more overinflated than the rest of them and ambitions to match - they start their war because they're trying to get and stay "in charge" of things, which to them means they must drive events somehow.

a worthwhile movie to see, if you're very, very young and haven't yet been totally disillusioned by how this world really works. if you're an adult, though... this shouldn't tell you anything you haven't figured out already, so unless you get some kind of contact high from extreme levels of cynicism, there's little real reason to go.

decently acted, good scenography, and another soundtrack that worked well enough i can't remember it being there. worth the ticket price, i guess, but that's considering we get a discount, so...
