From then on life started off on a roller coaster with him. He was drowned in the world of Soojin, playing basketball with her during the few breaks they had in a normal school week, and eventually also meeting her other friends. That happened one unexpected day when they were on their way to the basketball court. Instead of the usually empty court, Soojin and him were faced with Heechul and his group throwing a ball around. He frowned, wondering whether it was coincidence or if Heechul was trying to bug Soojin for real. Especially when she seemed to walk away from the basketball court the moment she noticed him as well. But then someone called her name and she turned back again. For a moment he expected some harsh words, but the girl calling suddenly smiled.

“Hey Soojin, want to play along?” One of the girls on the side called out. Soojin looked at the girl for a moment, but then, to his surprise, turned to look at him obviously wanting to know if he was okay with playing along with that group. He swallowed his surprise away and smiled at her.

“You go, Soojin, I will go have lunch then. Don't want to interfere with you and your friends.” he said calmly, sending a smile her way. She seemed to hesitate still, so he kept talking. “Really, it's no problem. You better go.” He nudged her towards the basketball court a little and smiled again. “I'll see you tomorrow.” With that, he walked off, and because she didn't follow anymore, he assumed she had taken his advice and gone to play with htem.

It wasn't that he didn't want to play with the group, or that he always wantd Soojin for himself, but first of all, it was unexpected - and he wasn't good with sudden events - and secondly, he still wasn't really sure whether Jongwoon and Jungsoo were in such a big fight with Heechul that they might not like him getting to know the third year medical student, or that they just ignored the guy themselves were completely fine with him interacting with Heechul.

That's why he went to search for his two friends at the place where they usually spent their lunch breaks, wanting to ask them about the whole thing. As he walked towards the soccer field of the school, he let his mind go over the past events. It was obvious that Soojin and Heechul's group were not on bad terms with each other, despite the events of the first time he saw them together. That had to mean that the group had simply done something she didn't like and she had started cursing them for it - so basically just being herself. But it also meant she knew at least one of them from outside school, because he had never seen her around them before.

“Kibum-ah!” Jongwoon greeted him slightly surprised once he reached their table, interrupting his thoughts. “What brings you here? Did your lunch break date ditch you?” The two grinned over that stupid joke, but he found himself frowning a little as he sat down That didn’t go unnoticed by his hyungs, because they stopped grinning.

“Something wrong in fairytale land?” Jungsoo then asked, honestly worried despite his little joke. It made Kibum look up, though, and he smiled lightly.

“No, nothing’s wrong, even though it isn’t a fairytale. She just met some friends at the basketball court and I didn’t want to interrupt.” he replied, merely causing his hyungs to snort.

“Always the gentleman.” Jungsoo sighed, whereas Jongwoon rolled his eyes.

“So now you think us good enough to sit together with again?” he inquired, huffing offended.

“Nah, not really. I just had a question for you guys.” The two puttered some sounds in their shock over his ‘insult’ but soon became serious again when they saw his face.

“Okay shoot.” Jungsoo finally said, putting another bite of his food in his mouth. He frowned, but then chewed anyway.

“Kim Heechul.” Kibum said, effectively causing Jongwoon to give him all his attention and Jungsoo to choke on his food. When the eldest managed to stop coughing, he glared at Kibum.

“I meant shoot as in ‘Ask your question,’ not as in ‘Kill me.’” he muttered. “What about Heechul?”

“He’s Soojin’s friend. The ones at the basketball court were him and his group. I was just wondering if you would mind me playing with them. Well, because I’m not really sure if it would be okay for me to..” He fell silent when he looked up and saw his to friends staring at him, dumbfounded. There was a short silence before he cleared his throat. “No? Okay. Then I’ll tell S-“ He didn’t get time to finish that sentence, because suddenly his two friends were squishing him in a hug.

“Kibummie so sweet!” Jongwoon exclaimed.

“So considerate, our Bummiewummie!” Jungsoo added, ruffling his hair as they got back up. He frowned at the sudden attention.

“What happened with Heechul is so long ago. We don’t even hold grudges anymore. Don’t know about him, though, so better don’t mention us.” Jongwoon then said, smiling slightly.

“Really, so cute. All worried that we wouldn’t like you socialising with him. If it’s the way to your princess’ heart, just go for it.” Jungsoo smiled a little as he said those words. “Heechul’s not really an evil dragon anyway, just slightly aggressive when in a bad mood.”

“It’s not a fairytale, hyung!” Kibum protested, but he was smiling again. It was obvious his friends had no problems whatsoever with him socialising with Heechul’s group, which was to be expected from the two. They were as friendly and forgiving as they were little, which meant a lot.

So when Heechul and his group showed up again the next day, he smiled a little nervously, but did accept Soojin’s offer to play along with them. For the first time since he met her, he was able to play basketball on the same team as her instead of against her, and together with Heechul they were up against the four other guys in the group, whom he soon got to know as Hangeng - Heechul’s brother - Shindong, Kyuhyun and Tae Woo.

It didn’t take long for him to be accepted into the group. Heechul was a much more amiable person than expected - he soon found that bickering was a normal pastime for Soojin and that it wasn’t just about Heechul trying to annoy her - and surprisingly he and the diva eldest of the group got along so well that after a while he even was invited to join their weekly Saturday basketball hangouts.

He did accept that invite, but when Heechul once told him to bring his other friends along, he could only laugh, already having discarded that idea before it was ever really brought up. On Fridays there were the outings with Jungsoo and Jongwoon to which Soojin came too and Sundays were probably the only days of the week when he didn’t meet up with anyone and could catch up on lost sleep, make long overdue homework or sometimes go out for some photographing.

All in all, life was good and it got even better when somehow someone managed to solve the four year long fight between Heechul and Jongwoon over the course of a weekend. The two groups merged together on the morning of the day he would get information about the transfer student that was going to stay at his house. It was strange to see Jongwoon together with Heechul, but the latter seemed to have no problems whatsoever with it, nor did he make any angry comments at Jungsoo using disrespectful language to address him with.

It was on that same day that they were invited by Heechul to go to the movies with the whole group together, something Kibum accepted without really thinking about it. He had an appointment with his homeroom teacher about the transfer students to worry about and when he saw Soojin heading in the same direction, he quickly caught up with her to go together. Their teacher’s explanation was long and rather boring, since he already knew most of the things she told them, and by the time she finished, their Japanese class started too long ago to still join in.

He therefore offered Soojin to go play some basketball, but she declined with the reason that it was nine in the morning only and she didn’t yet feel up to such intense playing. He had to agree she had a point there, so when she told him he could play and she’d watch, he declined as well. Instead, he brought her to the soccer field, a place where he knew from experience hardly anyone ever was and which would be good to just spend their time until their next class started.

He took her up on the bleachers and grabbed the both of them a seat on the highest bleachers. He grabbed a bottle of water out of his backpack, but merely decided to make some small talk conversations with her. It started off about the exchange students, with him telling him she would have a Chinese guy coming to live at his place and her talking about the Japanese girl they’d have over. She didn’t sound very enthusiastic about it, however, which made him wonder whether she was really that unwilling to meet new people.

“If you want I can come live with you instead and we can dump the two exchange students over at my house. My mother will be thrilled to have two people around she can worry over all day long.” he jokingly told her. Instead of laughing at that, she actually seemed to consider it, however, which made his heart do a double take before he started laughing at himself for being so ridiculous. He reached out a hand and ruffled her hair a little, after which they continued the conversation.

It went from the exchange students to their own situation at home. She told him all about her parents, making him learn a lot of new things about her because he had never really known much about her home situation. Apparently her mother was a very young person at heart who was often actively busy, considered Heechul to be a prince and loved shopping and shoes, whereas her father was the more serious type, a man who worked hard to give his family the things they needed. She jokingly mentioned something about her father being a poor man living with two women who only used up his money, which made them laugh, but they agreed that her parents at least did love each other a lot.

Since she told him so much about herself, something she hadn’t done at all before - she always played ball, there was never any talking - he continued with telling her about his own parents whom had divorced somewhere when he was eight. He didn’t think she’d know, because she was ignorant like that at times, but as she put a comforting hand on his shoulder for a moment, he realised that she did feel for him. He quickly passed over the subject, telling her about his mother who worked as a kindergarten teacher.

Yet at some point she asked what his father did for a living and if he still had contact with the man, effectively making him feel the slight sense of disgust he always felt when he thought about the man who had abandoned both him and his mother when they needed his support. He still sent money, of course, but money does not heal broken hearts or fill up empty arms. So he shortly explained that his father lived far away and they didn’t hear from him, but that he was fine with that because he didn’t even want to hear from the man.

They continued the conversation for a while longer, long past the end of Japanese class, and by the time they checked their surroundings, the soccer group was already playing on the field below them. Soojin checked her phone to see what time it was, and they realised that it was only twenty more minutes until the next class, since they had ditched the class right after Japanese - History of the Arts - already anyway. They decided to get up and make their way back to school so they could be in time for at least one class that day.

As they walked over the soccer field, a guy came running in opposite direction, almost knocking over Soojin. Kibum quickly reached out a hand to steady her, smiling amused when Hyukjae - the one that had just passed - threw a quick ‘I’m sorry!’ over his shoulder and smiled apologetically at her before running on. He was obviously late for the soccer practice, which was the only reason he didn’t stop and greet and make sure she was alright. Maybe part of the reasons for that also was that Kibum was walking with her anyway.

Soojin looked after him for a moment, but then turned back with a frown on her face. “Who are they?’ she asked and it was such a silly question from someone actually going to school there that he couldn’t help laughing out loud. Apparently she hadn’t expected that, as she threw him a surprised look, so he tried to contain himself and chuckled a little more as he answered.

“That’s so typically you to ask.” he told her amused, before continuing with the explanation. “They’re like our year’s Heechul and group, but without the eccentricity. Popular kids, soccer players until their last breath. They have a lot of fanatic admirers around school, boys and girls alike. Boys like them for their soccer talent, girls like them for both that and their looks, I guess.” She nodded thoughtfully to that and they both looked at the group of players again. “Two are Jungsoo’s cousins, one other has a girlfriend, the two last are often said to be gay for they are mostly found in each other’s company and hardly ever give girls a second glance. I don’t really think they are, though.”

“How do you know all this?” Soojin inquired the moment he finished talking, a question that made him smile again, trying his best not to laugh at her once more.

“They’re cool kids despite being popular. I’ve talked to them a few times. Once I even played soccer with them. Well, that made me feel like a failure.” he told her, grinning amused.

“When did this happen?” she immediately wanted to know, making him repress the urge to huff as he nudged her shoulder with his.

“Despite what you might think, I do hang out with other people than just you, Jungsoo and Jongwoon. I must admit that lately most of my time is spend in either your, their or Heechul’s company, but back in the day I was probably kind of friends with them.” he said in mocking offence, the smile still obvious on his face. She blushed because of his comment as she quickly started walking towards the school building again and he grinned widely at having achieved that.

“Looks like someone’s having a good day.” she muttered as he caught up with her, but he pretended not to hear and just happily walked along to the school building, incredibly proud of himself to have had such a personal conversation with her, as it proved that she trusted him enough to tell him so much about herself.
