So...we're getting hit with Irene and since I have yet (knock on wood) to lose power I spent my day finishing the last season of Battlestar Galactica. Where to even start...the complexity and depth of this series and it's characters was just amazing. It is so rare to have a series delve into the tissue of human nature and human relationships - most shows only scrape the surface of these ideas opting to stay within safe confines of what we'd like to imagine we're like as opposed to how we really are. I have often thought good scifi is usually more honest when it comes to character development and relationships because they can hide behind whatever unbelievable setting they're based in to make people more comfortable with the uncomfortable parts of humanity they plan to explore.
This is a show painted in grays. Lots of them with heroes that are fucked up and fuck up or would be messiahs hiding behind their flock for their own preservation. Machines and humans alike searching for identity and learning to make their own choices and then live them.
The series is not perfect by any means but the overall story arch was so well paced and obviously thought out. Also, to write a show with a pretty large ensemble and make the audience care about all of them is pretty impressive - especially with the more peripheral characters, like Dee or Felix. (and can I just say I gasped audibly when Dee shot herself!) And even those characters that toed the line (but really didn't they all) with going to far or doing evil things - you still cared about them.
I'm being very vague because anything in depth would take forever. But the the whole last season was just one shot after another - that is how a series should go out. I was sitting up, fist to my mouth almost every episode without even realizing it. I loved that last season, though I'm still not sure what's up with Kara - was she an angel? Was she half cylon like Hera? I feel like I must have missed something here, but either way I love her arch and the change in her when she finally accepts her death.
Also, (though I'm sure their probably the least popular ship just because they're pretty stable considering and consistent, but hey I lacked stability so I crave it) I kind of want to write Helo/Athena fanfic and I also think it's interesting that they are the relationship (besides Laura and the admiral) that preserves when they were the relationship from the beginning that should have failed or led to destruction.
As far as the end - from the beginning I wondered if when they found earth if we would be their ancestors or if they would become ours. I love the implication that we are the "all that will happen again" but hopefulness that maybe we won't let it.
I want to say more. But I'm really paranoid about the power going out and would like some battery power on my iPad so I can at least read my iBooks.
Those who are inclined, keep the east coast in your prayers.
