Calling for poems, please.

So, my reverend got me to agree to lead a vespers (our 30 minute Wednesday service that's very much based in reflection) and my week is next week. I have it mostly planned out but I feel like I need a third poem or reading after my spoken reflection and I'm wondering if anyone here has any recommendations.

I'm specifically looking for poems about ( Read more... )

church, poetry

All of Emily Dickinson's poems are online, usually divided into categories based on subject matter. If you look under Life, I'm pretty sure you could find something relevant (and beautiful) in about five minutes. Unless you're one of those people who have a visceral hatred of Emily Dickinson; I've run into one or two.

First off HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! lynnez59 July 9 2011, 14:00:29 UTC
Thanks for the rec. I definitely don't have a hatred towards her...I honestly have not read a lot of her's. I'm such a horrible English major having read little from that era of literature.

And have a fun day today.

How about some Leonard Cohen?

Anthem: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/leonardcohen/anthem.html

The only poem:

This is the only poem
I can read
I am the only one
can write it

I didn't kill myself
when things went wrong
I didn't turn
to drugs or teaching

I tried to sleep
but when I couldn't sleep
I learned to write

I learned to write
what might be read
on nights like this
by one like me

Thanks for the recs! I think I found something that will work hidden in one of the anthologies I have looked at sine school.

As I was looking through some of the poetry anthologies I had collected in college I discovered I have several poems of Olivers and Collins (and in the books I borrowed from Rev. Jeanne).

Thanks for the rec. I think I found something that works that was right under my nose. Now if I could just figure outnif if made the service to short or long. Have I mentioned I'm uber nervous?

I didn't have a poetry rec for you (although I was thinking about it for the past few days)...but I wanted to be sure to say good luck tomorrow and I'm sending you good thoughts for the vesper service. I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job. *hugs*

It went well. I think after facing 30 people with a much darker topic and then facing 5 people with a more...not light but lighter was a little underwhelming as far as comparing experiences, but it was good. I really enjoyed putting it together. It was like working on a story...it was that same high only also exposing your own story.

Thanks for asking! I hope you're well. I'm terrible about commenting because I'll see a post but won't have time to comment until later and then I just get distracted.
