I think one reason why I’ve disconnected a bit from fandom participation is I just can’t deal with the shipper v. anti-shipper bickering and how fans either put VDO on a pedestal or think he's the cause for all the things they don't like with the show. I don't understand why this fandom insists on having such stark divisions within it's fan base when it is (was) a show all about grey areas, and just this need everyone seems to have to be proven right for their side of the shipper line. Maybe I'm just not experienced enough with this whole fandom thing and maybe all fandoms are like that. I don't know, but there are plenty of slashers out there who know their ships will NEVER be seen on screen (particularly on American TV) who have to be content with the fact that cannon and fandom are two separate worlds and will more than likely never intersect in the way they’d like to see. How do they deal with fandom participation when many people are probably uncomfortable with their ships? Honestly, I kind of like that division, because all the “shippy moments” in each episode is not the only thing I want to talk about in reference to the actual show and that’s what it always turns into and that’s why no one talks to anyone outside of their shipper or anti-shipper bubble.
Plus, I mean, come on, were VDOs comments really that big of a surprise - just by hearing random interviews on completely different topics I probably would have guessed what his answer would have been because all the work he’s done in the last 5 years or so have had nothing to do with falling in love romance, but more family dynamic oriented or you know un-credited bit parts where he dies in the first two minutes of the film. That doesn’t mean I wouldn't like to ask him some clarifying questions about my own observations in regards to the dynamic between Goren and Eames, but I also don’t understand what the big deal is (but at the same time I kind of do because it’s nice to be right and to have your feelings vindicated and we get very attached to our ships, but I feel like we have to remember that’s us, not the actors. I would imagine their feelings about the relationship between their characters isn’t nearly as important to them as it is to us but I actually do agree that seeing a romance on the show isn’t right for the show).
Why does the show have to hinge on any romance at all? Why can’t Goren just get his shit together as an individual, finding salvation in himself and not in the love of another person? Why does Eames have to be the one to swoop in to give him meaning or some other yet to be named/seen woman? Why can’t people just enjoy the mystery and speculation without getting all defensive as if someone just cursed their mother?
And really at the end of the day it doesn't matter what does or doesn't happen on the actual show because I'll still want to ship G &E either way because that's just what I see when I watch them and I've been doing it too long now go be detered or encouraged by cannon. In fact I think the reason I like them is because the show has never really played it up for attention like other shows do and whatever their relationship is, it has always been understated. They've always just been G & E and I like them like that.
