So apparently God decided to gift me and my fellow Dec. 16thers snow today

So, yeah, it's snowing quite steadily and the roads are pretty much covered. My boses went ahead and let us all head out so I am home and they're more than willing to pick us up tomorrow in their giant SUVs if the roads are sheets of ice (which they probably will be). So I got a snow day for my birthday...not exactly what I wanted but I guess it'll ( Read more... )

Remember the CI episode where Goren realizes the suspect and the witness are related because of their unique speech pattern, where they enunciate the middle 't's like 'city' and 'pretty?' They say that this is odd because most Americans pronounce 't's in the middle of a word as 'd's. FALSE. Most speakers of American English, when encountering a 't' or a 'd' between two vowels (regardless of where it is in terms of the whole word) will pronounce it as a sound intermediate to 't' and 'd,' known as a tap or a flap depending on how you articulate it.

Speaking of t's, say the word 'tan' aloud, and then the word 'tree.' Odds are, you are probably not enunciating a perfect 'tree' but rather a sound closer to "chree." The "ch" sound is made up of a 't' plus a 'sh,' and on the journey from the 't' to the 'r' most people drop in a 'sh' just to make it easier. A similar thing happens when moving from 'd' to 'r'. Say "drop." Did you really make a 'd' sound? Or did it sound more like 'jrop?'

Oh, that's one of my favorite episodes.

And I did say those words and it's true - I do say jrop. Basically you're saying Americans are lazy...lol

Thanks for playing along

Eh, everybody's lazy. If there's one thing I took away from linguistics, it's that if there's a way to say something easier and still be understood, people will do it. I think the biggest example in my own personal experience is how people (myself included) rarely say 'thank you' or even 'thanks' when a door is held open, shortening it to 'nks.'

I'll stop rambling about linguistics now. ;)

No big, but thanks for the belated wished.

You know what I'd love if you have time - an animated icon from "Unrequited" - the scene where Eames makes the crack "dance of the merry widow' and Goren does that goofy little around her - that little dance with her reaction as an icon would be super fun.
