So TNT had a "Southland" marathon on yesterday when I got home...gearing up for the TNT premiere of new episodes. I tried watching the pilot when it aired on NBC and had a hard time getting into, but as I was watching (on and off) the more I liked it. Well, I actually have two words:
Regina King! It's so hard to find good, well developed female characters that aren't essentially just tropes for their male counterparts and its even harder to find a black female character, who is both positive and fully developled as a complex, multilayered character. Hollywood is very hard on black woman (as is this country...but that is a different post) and has very few roles for them that are really meaty and meaningful outside of the typical sterotypes. I was so excited to see Regina King and how empowered her character Lydia is. It reminds me of why I loved Gina Torres so much in "Firefly."
AND...I love how they flipped this one character -- the one who seems like the sterotypical hard ass white cop you've seen in all the movies; the one you're just waiting for his bigotry colors to show...he turns out to be gay. Well played Ann Biderman, well played.
I'm not sure how much I will get into this show, but I want to be enthralled with a fandom. I mean I love G&E and they still have a contract on most of muse's time, but it'd be nice to have another fandom that people are actually excited about since interest is waning. There are still some of us out there who want the fandom to go on after KE and VDO's exit, but it feel like a lot have lost interest in the show or with a cahracter. I'm in an odd place, because I find there are very few of us who actually equally like both KE and VDO...most are in it for one or the other and either have no opinion about the other or a strong distaste. I find it rather interesting and please feel free to call me on it if I'm generalizing too much...just something I've noticed. Makes it hard to find a niche.
Oh well...I'm done. Back to work
