'Leavin... on a jet plane...'

... man, I wish that were true. I feel like taking a trip or something. I may even restart the search for some nice places in the mountains where (hopefully) it'd be cooler. The heat's pretty scorching and so today, I'll be taking all the 'sheltered' routes around campus in order to make life just that little bit easier ( Read more... )

Hurray at guitar-playing! Yes, practice indeed. The calluses are inevitable though...they'll help you press on the strings firmly without hurting yourself. Of course you'll feel pain in the beginning before they finally set in. But hurray! :)

Thanks! Hehehe, the calluses grow each day and thankfully so because my fingers still hurt.. particularly with G. I was wondering... is G really that hard? Or am I possibly holding the neck wrong or something? My fingers just find it a really awkward chord to play and it comes out sounding dodgy! :P

No, its supposed to be one of the easiest chords to play, with C and E and D.

Are you playing it like this?

G
E|-3--------|
B|-3--------|
G|----------|
D|----------|
A|-2--------|
E|-3--------|

I've been playing it as instructed in this diagram -

That one's fine too, but the G sound would come out much clearer if you add another finger at the third fret at the B string. No worries, it gets better with practice :) And this would be so much easier if I was actually there with you to show you. But you have people there to show you how to do it anyway (things you worry about like holding the guitar properly or pressing on the strings right, etc) so I'm sure you'll do fine :)

Oh! that diagram is a little backward from the looks of things but yeah, I've been playing the B string and not the A... does it sound better or worse that way?

My job actually kinda helps out with the calluses as it's mostly manual. ;)

True... this is so not something you can learn via IM or email or what have you but you were right about getting someone to help me out at first so I can fix up technique. My bro has been a huge help (he probably could be of more, but he's never home ;)) and as per your advice, I've got that note memorized. Seriously, already love the fact that I know how to tune! Hehehe, small victories indeed. Thanks heaps for all the encouragement and advice though darl {{hug}}
