A year or so ago I decided to try some Nero Wolfe books (by Rex Stout). I loved them, and read half a dozen or so. Ever since, I've been getting one or two at the library on occasion, as I find them. I think that Rex Stout can really write a compelling story, even though he was a man of his times and had some definitely sexist ideas. He's better than many of his contemporaries about women, though.
My daughter works in a used book store. The owner and manager allow her to "check out" books that are not very valuable and/or selling quickly. Someone brought in an estate's worth of old books, and there were half a dozen Nero Wolfe novels in the batch. She brought them all home to me, as the bookstore currently has a surplus of them.
What a thoughtful daughter I have. I'll probably end up buying the books, too. This is another reason why the owner and manager are quite willing to let my daughter take some books home for me to read. They know they're likely to get a sale.
I used to read to Lisa when she was young, until she was about thirteen. She loved it, though she hated to read herself. She's dyslexic, and had a very difficult time learning to read. Now she loves to read, and fortunately for us both, we have many overlapping areas of interest. She doesn't like most hard SF, and I don't like romances, but overall, we enjoy a lot of each other's books. We're able to save a lot of money on our bookbuying this way, as we read each other's books. After she started reading for pleasure, she started going through my library. I'm so glad that she enjoys reading now.
