Rally Day

May 30, 2009 18:31

Today was busy, and a great deal of fun. First off was the single payer health insurance rally, out on the capital lawn. They had a great band playing Beatles songs, and our Pastor made the opening prayer. Lotsa UUs there; in fact we had our own little section going. Unfortunately, we had to leave early to go to the Million Fag March, which, for those who don't know, is a anti Fred Phelps rally. I learned something really odd at this rally, if you wave at people in cars as they drive by, not knowing why your there, they wave back by instinct; then they get down the line and see more of the signs, and know why your there, they go red for having waved >:P

Again, quite a few UUs at this as well; even some who did what we did, and came over from the health insurance rally. Also a ton from the atheist (ACT) group there at the march. I am gonna put up pics from both (although only two from the heath rally, didn't stay long enough to get the good stuff) I also am including some of my fav signs from the Fag march, including the "Jesus had two Daddies" one. I say over 200 people at the Anti Fred Phelps one; and 100 or so at the Health one before we left, but we also left just as it was getting started :( (like, right after Lisa prayed).

We only got 2 or 3 hateful things yelled at us out of car windows during the Fag march, which is probably really good for Topeka (aka Red Neck heaven of KS). One women yelled that we needed Jesus on one block, and then evil fags down the other. The other was an older gent in a huge camper that bothered to drive by 3 times just to flip us off. I figured the guy in the camper will pay for all the hate at the pump >:P

Front of the March group; and by the way, taking picture while walking is not as easy as you'd think ;)
