It's been a crappy week - both D & I have been down with the flu the whole bloody week. Lizzie is bored to tears with both of us and has now perfected the pathetic head-between-the-paws & eyes-rolled-upward stare. She's ready to run an ad for new human companions because these two slugs won't even get out of bed any more to take her for a walk. How do you explain 'sick' to a dog? She was mildly sympathetic for a day or two, but a week of no activity ! .. she's done. In an effort to entertain her, I pulled the blinds up in the front bedroom, which faces the street, and pushed a wicker trunk under the window (large, low window) so she could perch up there and survey her Queendom, barking her commands and quarrels to whoever dares walk on her street. Worked for awhile (actually, I think she is in there now, I hear her grumbling). Her baleful stares -- and this dog can actually sigh -- has won her bits of toast and nibbles of eggs and the special treat of licking ice-cream bowls clean. She's been cuddled and coddled and promised great outings as soon as we are well. I know she will hold me to it, too !!! I'm afraid I might be setting precedents here that are going to cause me grief once I am up and around again. A bit of 'compensation' spoiling going on here that might be hard to undo.
But, I actually did get up and get dressed today. So did D. Things might be looking up finally. Wandered out into the backyard and cleaned up a week's worth of doggy poop ! Wow! And she's just a little dog - who'da thought !
Rather than leave you on that note - I'll share a picture I took of the petunias while I was outdoors getting fresh air and tidying things up. These lovely blooms are last year's plants ! They straggled through the heat of the summer. I cut them way back in the fall, fed them, and look at them now. I am thrilled. A few of last year's hyacinth bulbs are showing themselves again too, and it looks like at least two of the geraniums are also putting out new growth. Hooray !
