The mushrooms broke through the desert dirt in my backyard. The ground cracked open overnight, and the crowns began to push through. It was like watching a birth. The middle 'shroom is quite large, almost five inches in diameter. I find them quite beautiful. They resemble wood carvings, but the caps are silky and spongy, the inner folds like velvet. The split 'shroom puffs clouds of black spores when provoked. It's breathing.
The saguaro skeleton is the desert's driftwood. This one stands in a natural, desert park about a mile from my house. I find it striking. I can get lost in the layers of bark brown, and creme, and cinnamon, and moldy white. I love its textures, the beauty of decay.
