Feed the Birds

I'm really enjoying having a bird-tree in the yard. We've got this huge, mature spruce in the corner of the back yard. Its lower branches are trimmed back, and I can walk under them. The top is loaded with pinecones. It's perfect for birds...

We have a niger seed feeding hanging in the lower branches, just as high as I can reach for refilling. It is loaded with goldfinches at all times. They're notoriously messy eaters, even with seeds as small as niger, so the ground is hopping with juncos most of the day. When it was painfully cold on Tuesday, we even had a morning dove and a handful of sparrows looking for the spilled niger. Those bigger birds don't usually bother with such small seed...

And, we have a suet feeder beside the finch feeder, and we've got a WOODPECKER! He/she comes early every morning, and later every evening. Lovely... During the day, we also have a flock of chickadees, and they're feeding from the pinecones as well as the suet feeder. The whole tree is hopping all day long :>

I'd like to get "regular" seed to scatter on the ground for the bigger birds. I don't think I'll bother feeding the neighbourhood squirrels after all - they seem to be fed by almost all of the neighbours.
