The anonymity factor on the 'net is, indeed, a defining factor of the beast. In most situations, I'm completely cool with that. It's just been occurring to me lately, however, that while I love the concept of lj, I really am becoming less & less comfortable with being the "true confessions" sort of gal that I am with such an open list of readers. Given who I am and what I need from this online journaling thing, complete anonymity amongst my "friends list" just isn't working for me. Even though I believe that that the anonymous comment in p's journal wasn't about me, the fact that it happened at all just hammered home my belief that it's a lot of trust to put your shit out there via lj, and then to watch as a "friend" or "reader" or whatever you call them betrays that trust with a resounding "Hell yeah!" from other folks -- ick. It's just not where I need to be or what I want to be witnessing right now.
LJ has been a grand & on-going experiment for me -- definitely useful for uncovering my myriad insecurities and general neuroses! ;-)
*nodding* The little "put your name and 'phone number in a private post so if you're in trouble we can call and get help" thingy which was going 'round a bit back was a good reminder that even "private" posts are readable by someone, somewhere.
That's not, in my opinion, a problem. It's the nature of the beast. It was just a good reminder of the old adage that NOTHING is private when it's online.
