Rocky Horror warm-up in Duisburg

No, I was a good girl and didn´t take any photos during the show, of course...

But there´s still some stray confetti on my coat and in my handbag, the stuff is quite difficult to get rid off for good, it felt like I left a trail of it all the way from Duisburg back to town.

This was fun. So much fun it left me on a perpetual high that hasn´t quite worn off even four days later. Thanks mostly to Rob Fowler´s friggin´ amazing performace as Frank - here´s someone putting Tim Curry to shame (...and I do love Tim Curry´s Frank...), re-inventing the part and running with it. Yes, there´ll be people again saying Rob´s Frank is too masculine, but he´s purrfect, IMO. Bloody hot, too. Lickable. He´s surely on the butch-ier side of the spectrum, but still a true diva and OTT enough. I don´t really like it when Frank is portrayed too much like a (´xcuse me) screaming Queen. The character has the be strong, too, otherwise Riff-Raff steals the show far too easily. And the blond wig...have I already said how much I love love love the blond wig? Where the hell is it written in stone that Frank has to be dark-haired, just because Tim Curry was? Sure enough, Rob wore a Tim-Curry-memorial wig when first entering the stage, it was a nice little nod, but I was glad when the thing was thrown off seconds later to reveal all that platinum Madonna glory.
And don´t get me started on Rob´s vocal abilities...that man could sing me the Yellow Pages and I´d still bliss out happily.

Sky DuMont as the Narrator was a bit of a surprise, he wasn´t bad, but I thought he could do better. Maybe he´ll need to settle into the role a bit more, play it a bit less dry and with a bit more of a twinkle. He sure has enough charisma and sense of irony to do it.

Daisy Wood Davis as a strong Janet, clearly wearing the trousers. Poor Brad did´t have chance against her. But I like an awkward Brad (especially during the Floor Show), it only endears the character, and in the end he´s always the one losing most. And give him his moment to shine, Once In A While has always been of my favourite songs in the show.

Dalek skirts in the end again for Riff and Magenta, yesssssss (I heart the costume department! Especially for those outfits and the whole Floor Show get-up with the Esther Williams Transylvanians and the swan feather fans). I´ve only seen video footage of the last tour (2008 and 09 were the Years Of Absent Fun for me), but I like Stuart Matthew Price and Maria Franzen better than the actors in the current production, but they were decent enough. Kerry Winter is a fun Columbia, she´s kinda cute.

The only let-down for me was Rocky. He was okay vocal-wise, but to me he looked a bit too young and whimpy. I can jolly well do without any too-muscular hulk, but Rocky has to be athletic at least...

I already booked tickets for one of the Dortmund performances in January...and I´m sure I can squeeze in another show sometime between summer and autumn, I´d love to see it from the front row just once...

musicals, rhs
