It's a tentative balance between the four of them. The TARDIS is full, bursting at the seams, and one misstep will bring it all crashing down on them.
Rose resents Lynda. She’s used to being sandwiched in-between Jack and the Doctor, and Lynda’s presence throws it off. Rose is a staple, someone who seems like she’s been there forever. She knows all the tricks, she’s used to the adventures that seem to find them no matter where they go. She has an easy, rooted relationship with Jack and the Doctor, and Lynda can’t help but envy her sometimes. Rose is spoiled, and Lynda wants that.
The Doctor’s still the Doctor, and she doesn’t understand him much more than when she met him, and she doesn’t like him any less, but he’s got a handful. Three people traveling with him now, that’s a lot, and he doesn’t always know what to do with them all. It’s not as if he ignores her, but he’s more used to Jack and Rose. Sometimes he’ll be rattling off a list of instruction to Jack and Rose, and she’ll ask what she can do, and there’s this moment Lynda hates, when he just stares at her for a second before remembering who she is.
Jack is too often the one who makes the most effort to include her. He’ll take a minute and explain things to her when the Doctor was doing something completely mad, or off-the-wall, or was going on about a topic she knew nothing about. He flirts with her to break tension, or to give her something to do, or if he thought she looked just too lost. He checks on her when the Doctor doesn’t, and Lynda’s grateful for that.
There’s a balance, she’s noticed, and it’s shaky since she came. So in the last place there’s Lynda Moss, trying to keep her head down, not rock the boat. Not sure all the time if she wants to stay, or if there’s anything to go back to if she doesn’t. She's the extra person, the fourth wheel. Sweet.
