“….-ui xian….Kui xian….”
Kyuhyun stirred in his sleep as someone gently shook him.
“Mmm….” He squinted his eyes open
“Zhou mi…” he groaned and sat up on his bed, “What time is it?”
“Almost eight.”
Kyuhyun sighed “Eight? Why are you waking me up so early?” He snapped, not bothering to hide his frustration.
“But I thought you have class…..” Zhou mi whispered softly.
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes and fell back into bed “I slept at like 4am okay, I’ll go to the afternoon lecture, geez, you’re not my secretary.”
“Okay…I’m sorry for waking you…”
Kyuhyun waited for the click of the door to indicate Zhou mi had left his room, but it didn’t come.
“What?” He grumbled into his pillow
“….Why did you come back so late yesterday ni-“
Zhou mi didn’t even finish his sentence before Kyuhyun swore loudly.
“Fuck Zhou mi, what are you my mum or something?”
Kyuhyun didn’t even have to look at Zhou mi to know that he was biting his lip, it sent a shot of annoyance through him.
“Just get out now will you? Find someone else to annoy for once.”
“Sorry……”
Kyuhyun heard the satisfying click of the door closing before he drifted back into sleep.
-
“Zhou mi ge! Do you want to grab something to eat now before we head to class?” Henry’s cheerful voice came through the phone, Zhou mi pondered for a moment.
“Uhmm….sorry Henry, but I want to use this time now to make some food for Kui xian to eat when he wakes up.”
“Kyuhyun?” Henry’s scowl was obvious through his voice “I’m sure he can take care of himself, he is only a flight of stairs away from the campus cafeteria.
“But he’d be really hungry when he wakes up! Also I accidentally woke him up just then and he got mad at me, I should make up for it.”
Henry sighed “How many times have I told you already ge, you should stop treating yourself like his personal maid or something, he’s just a spoilt brat that takes everything for granted.”
Zhou mi tutted “Don’t be mean Henry! Kui xian isn’t anything like that!”
“Oh really? So he gets angry at you for waking up an hour before you need to just to wake him up for class?”
“He was just tired! He slept at 4am!” Zhou mi argued.
“Yea, tired from partying all night.” Henry scoffed.
“It’s good to have some fun once in a while, it’s university after all.” Zhou mi was already getting out the utensils out of the kitchen cupboard, phone clamped between his shoulder and ear.
“Look who’s talking.” Henry said sarcastically.
“Okay Henry, I need to go now! I’ll see you in class!” Zhou mi quickly before Henry can start whining about how anti-social he is by never attending parties.
“Hmmm….” Zhou mi inspected the fridge “I’ll make omelette rice! Kyuhyun’s favourite!” He nodded at himself in satisfaction before rolling up his sleeves.
-
Kyuhyun woke up with his stomach grumbling.
He walked into the living room of the apartment unit him and Zhou mi shared.
A plate of omelette rice sat on the table with a mug of tea next to it, carefully glad-wrapped, a note lay next to it.
:Kui Xian!
Sorry for waking you up early today T_T
Hope you will forgive me! I made omelette! Eat it before you go to your afternoon lecture okay?
P.S I don’t know how much you drank last night, but I made tea anyway, just in case :S
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes and scrunched up the note, tossing it into the bin.
He eyed the dish.
He just didn’t really feel like omelette today.
Kyuhyun dumped the contents of the dish into the bin before pouring the tea down the drain.
He grabbed his wallet and left, not bothering to bring his keys since Zhou mi always comes home directly after his lectures anyway.
-
By the time Kyuhyun returned it was already evening.
“Kui Xian!” Zhou mi scrambled out of the sofa to greet him.
Kyuhyun nodded slightly, not even bothering to greet back, Zhou mi just reminded him of an over-enthusiastic dog welcoming it’s owner home sometimes.
“Sorry….did the omelette taste really bad? I saw it in the bin.”
Kyuhyun frowned in annoyance “Are you trying to make me feel guilty or something?”
Zhou mi gasped and quickly shook his head “No! Of course you don’t have to feel guilty Kui xian! I just want to know so I can improve on the recipe.”
Kyuhyun shrugged “I don’t know, I didn’t try it…I just didn’t feel like it.”
“Oh.” Zhou mi’s face fell and Kyuhyun felt a strange satisfaction.
“Don’t wake me up tomorrow.” Kyuhyun said coolly before going back into his room.
-
Zhou mi stopped trying to wake Kyuhyun up, but there would always be breakfast on the table and coffee in the pot when which Kyuhyun either threw in the bin or took it with him to bribe his classmate for notes.
“Good morning Kui xian~ you’re early today~” Zhou mi chirped cheerfully. Kyuhyu grunted, it was just one of those days when he found himself waking up in an inhumane time and not being able to go back to sleep.
Zhou mi was rushing around the kitchen, beating eggs and boiling water.
Kyuhyun tutted “You should really start noticing that I never eat any of it, do you never see the bin?”
Zhou mi’s smile faltered for a second but quickly regain it’s brightness.
“But Kui xian! What if I stopped making it one day and you suddenly woke up feeling really really hungry? You know the story of the boy who called wolf right? I don’t want you to starve to death one day just because I didn’t make breakfast!” Zhou mi gasped and shook his head dramatically and went back to beating his eggs.
Kyuhyun scoffed and stalked out of their shared room, making sure to bang the door extra hard.
-
Zhou mi’s face fell as soon as the door closed.
“Kui xian….what can I do to make you smile at me?”
He sighed and dialled Henry’s number
“Henry….do you want some breakfast?”
Henry was more than happy to walk a flight of stairs to enjoy some home made breakfast.
“Be careful! You can eat slowly, no one is fighting you for it.”
Henry grinned and gulped down a mouthful of coffee
“Ge, why are you not eating?” Henry asked forked a bit of omelette and held it in front of Zhou mi’s mouth.
“Oh um…no thanks.” Zhou mi pushed away Henry’s hand “I’m actually allergic to eggs….”
Henry looked up in shock.
“Only a little though! Like I can eat cake and things like that…but just not a whole..egg.”
Henry raised his eyebrows “Don’t you get a reaction from making it though?”
Zhou mi self consciously withdrew his hands, but Henry had already darted forward and held them up to examine.
Zhou mi’s fingers were cladded with red, bumpy spots.
Zhou mi pulled his hand free “Its- these were from a few days ago…they’re going away already…I don’t get them everyday I just have to be careful….”
“Ge! Why did you make it?” Henry quickly dragged the plate of omelette away from Zhou mi, as if it could hurt him by just looking.
Zhou mi smiled sheepishly.
Henry groaned in realization “It’s because of Kyuhyun isn’t it? Why ge? Why? He-“ He sighed “Okay, Kyuhyun is a friend of mine too, but he’s…it’s not worth it, ge.” Henry slumped in his seat.
Zhou mi shook his head “No, it’s worth it! He-“
“No! This is not worth it, ge! He is not worth it! Why ge? Why? What’s so good about him anyway?”
“I don’t know..I just- even the first time I lay my eyes on him…I just want to be by his side.” He smiled sweetly and shrugged “I want him to be happy, want to see his smile…its worth it to me.”
“He wasn’t always like this, he used to be nice to me, he’s just stressed lately.”
Henry sighed again in defeat “You’re such a masochist, ge.”
Zhou mi grinned “Keep eating, you’ll be late for class.”
Henry took a look t his watch and gasped, quickly starting to shove food down his throat again.
-
“Zhou mi, are you doing anything tomorrow night?” Kyuhyun asked lazily as he stretched himself out on the couch.
Zhou mi’s heart quickened “No, I don’t have anything planned. Why?”
Kyuhyun groaned “Can you find somewhere to go for the night then?” it wasn’t really a question, more like a command
“I’m bringing a girl home, and you know…” Kyuhyun smirked “It’s not really something I want you to be here for.”
Zhou mi’s smiled froze “S-sure.”
“Thanks man. Oh yea, can you cook something too? I thought dinner at home might be more impressive than going out.”
Before Zhou mi could reply, Kyuhyun had already muttered a “Thanks” and retreated to his room with a yawn.
It’s worth it. Your happiness is worth my heart, Kui xian.
--
Zhou mi imagined that the girl will be impressed as he grilled the steak perfectly, he imagined how happy the girl would make Kyuhyun wile he put the roses in the vase. A thorn pricked him and a droplet of blood trickled down his finger, he quickly washed it off before it could stain the white table cloth.
Worth it.
Zhou mi didn’t end up going anywhere that night, he rang Henry only to find that he was with Amber,
“You can hang out with us ge! Amber wants to see you too!”
Zhou mi only refused politely and promised to treat them both to dinner next time.
He rang Heechul and Hangeng only with both of their phones going directly to voice mail.
He sighed and ducked into his scarf as he sat down on a bench and looked up at the student dorms.
The light to their apartment was on. Zhou mi wondered what Kyuhyun and the girl would be doing now.
Eating dinner? Talking? Kissing? In bed already?
He clutched his heart.
It hurts, Kui xian. It hurts.
-
Kyuhyun took a moment to regret not ever eating what Zhou mi cooked as he took the first bite of the steak.
His date gasped “This is amazing, you made this Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun replaced his shocked face with a smile “Only for you.”
The girl blushed, and Kyuhyun knew he’d get what he wanted tonight.
-
He had fallen asleep sometime during the night and woke up again when droplets of water starting hitting his face that was already numb from the cold and his tears.
He chuckled lightly to himself. “Even the skies are conspiring against you, Zhou mi.”
Its it time to give you up, Kui xian?
He sat there, letting the rain drench his clothes and hair. He didn’t dare go home even when it was dawn, afraid of what he might see.
A girl wearing Kyuhyun’s shirt making breakfast where he usually did?
Kyuhyun actually eating what the girl cooked?
Them making out on the couch?
Anything would make his heart break all over again.
--
Kyuhyun woke up to find his shirt missing, as expected. It was something girls liked to do after sex, wear the man’s shirt and make breakfast.
He entered the kitchen to find his date waving a piece of toast at him “I made breakfast~~ “ she giggled.
He frowned. He suddenly really, really wanted to eat an omelette.
“Is there something wrong?” The girl wrapped her arms around his neck and pecked him on the cheek.
“No…just….” Kyuhyun smiled, embarrassed. “Do you know how to make an omelette?”
It took several broken eggs for her to produce a slightly burnt omelette.
“Sorry baby, I’ll learn to make better omelettes.” She battered her eyelashes.
He smiled and forced the omelette down his throat while crunching on eggshells and lying about how delicious it was.
He tried to imagine how good Zhou mi’s omelettes would taste like.
--
Zhou mi returned home in the evening, later than Kyuhyun for once.
Kyuhyun stood up awkwardly to greet him “Hey man, thanks for yesterday, your food was great.”
Zhou mi gave him a small smile in return “It’s okay.”
Kyuhyun frowned, something was different, off, but he couldn’t quite place what.
“Uh…have you eaten? I’ll treat you! As a thanks for yesterday.”
Zhou mi looked at him, Kyuhyun shifted uncomfortably.
“No thanks, I actually just came back to grab some stuff, I’m staying at Heechul and Hangeng’s tonight.”
“Oh.” Kyuhyun shrugged “Next time then.”
Zhou mi nodded and smiled politely and went back into his room.
Kyuhyun stared at his retreating back.
Zhou mi sank onto the ground as soon as he closed the door behind him.
This is the first time you offered to treat me to dinner….you must be in a good mood, because of her.
Thank you, Kui xian. For your smile.
-
Heechul pulled Zhou mi to sit and poured him a drink as soon as he rang the door bell.
“Heechul hyung, I-“
“Don’t speak, drink.” Heechul ordered, Zhou mi drank obediently, wincing at the burning sensation sliding down his throat.
“He’s a dick, seasoning, right Geng?”
Hangeng hugged Zhou mi softly “Sorry you couldn’t reach us yesterday…if only we had known Kyuhyun was….”
“Huh? Hyung, how-“
“He was bragging the whole day today,” Heechul rolled his eyes as he poured Zhou mi some soju “And he’s always been kinda a dick anyway.”
Zhou mi didn’t say anything, didn’t argue for Kyuhyun for once, didn’t agree either, he just sat there and drank.
“You can cry, Mi…w-we wont mind.” Hangeng told him through slurred words as they emptied another bottle of soju.
Zhou mi chuckled “No! I-I won’t ge! Because you know what?” He let out a drunken laugh “I’m done with tears, I have no more left. I give up!” He declared loudly, waving his hands in the air “From this second on! I give up on Cho Kyuhyun!”
Heechul cheered hysterically and Hangeng laughed “Right! Let’s drink to this!” Hangeng raised his glass and the other two followed.
From this second on, my heart wont break anymore. It can’t, anymore.
--
Kyuhyun woke up to a feeling that something was wrong.
He cursed as he glanced as his watch. Missed his lecture by two hours.
Even when Zhou mi had stopped waking him up, the clattering from him making breakfast would usually wake Kyuhyun up anyway and he would only lie in bed until he had to go to his lectures.
There was no clattering today, no breakfast, no Zhou mi.
Kyuhyun dragged himself out of bed as his stomach grumbled.
He opened the fridge to find nothing already edible. He sank onto the couch in defeat.
The café was three flights of stairs away, but he would need to get changed and have a shower.
He had already missed his only lecture that day, meaning that he could just stay at home all day, which takes away any motivation of getting changed just to go down and buy food.
“But Kui xian! What if I stopped making it one day and you suddenly woke up feeling really really hungry?” Zhou mi’s voice floated around his head and he cursed.
“There’s no way I can’t make something edible with my IQ.” Kyuhyun opened the fridge once again and took out some ingredients.
Eggs, cheese. He stared at it.
He cursed as eggshells fell into the yellow mixture. “Arghhh!”
Suddenly, the turning of keys were heard and the door opened to reveal a very haggard looking Zhou mi.
“Zhou mi! Just the right time! Make me something to eat!” Kyuhyun said desperately pointing at his fail egg mixture.
Zhou mi stared at him, Kyuhyun frowned at his gaze.
“I’m sorry Kyuhyun, I’m tired and really need some sleep. The café is only three flights of stairs down though, I’m sure you don’t need directions.” With that, Zhou mi staggered back into his room leaving Kyuhyun alone in the kitchen.
---
He was stupid.
Zhou mi realised this days into avoiding Kyuhyun.
He was stupid for ever thinking Kyuhyun would notice him.
No concern, no guilt, in fact Kyuhyun hardly even noticed absence of his presence, he was too busy with his new relationship.
The girl Kyuhyun brought home ended up being Sooyoung- a girl in the same major as Zhou mi. Beautiful, humourous and frankly a lot nicer than Kyuhyun.
“Hello Zhou mi-ssi!” Sooyoung greeted him cheerfully as he stepped out into the living room.
The coulpe was cuddling on the couch watching TV, Kyuhyun’s arm snaked around Sooyoung’s slim waist as he stole kisses onto her cheek.
Blinding. Too blinding.
“Hello.” Zhou mi’s forced smile was equally blinding, his eyes curling stiffly.
“We ordered pizza, do you want to eat with us?” Sooyoung offered, swatting Kyuhyun away with a blush as he kissed her neck.
Zhou mi shifted and tried to come up with an excuse “No, umm…”
“Eat with us.” Kyuhyun said as he stopped trying to kiss Sooyoung but instead tightened his embrace.
Zhou mi looked at Kyuhyun in surprise and quickly averted his eyes away from the sight. He suddenly felt sick.
“No…I have a date already.” Zhou mi lied, “Thanks for offering though.”
“Oh okay.” Sooyoung smiled and Zhou mi quickly rushed out of the suffocating apartment.
--
“Does he have a date with his girlfriend?” Sooyoung poked Kyuhyun curiously.
Kyuhyun shrugged “Dunno, probably not though, I’ve never seen him around with any girl.”
“Hmmm….he seems nice though, I should introduce him to one of my girls.” Sooyoung suddenly got excited of the idea of match-making “Maybe Yoona? She just got out of a relationship though….Tiffany? What type of girls do you think he’d like Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun frowned “You shouldn’t meddle with other people’s business.” He said sternly as he withdrew his arm from her waist to cross them.
Sooyoung’s face fell “Sorry…..I was just-“
Kyuhyun’s face softened “Sorry baby, I just think we should let Zhou mi take care of his own love life, while we can take care of ours.” He smirked and tackled Sooyoung who squealed and laughed.
“Yah! Cho Kyuhyun you pervert!”
