{Fic} Against The Current That Carries Us 2/?

“No!” Kyuhyun screamed as he woke up with a start, his hair and robes were wet with sweat.
His breathing was heavy as his brain raced at the dream that he’d woken up from.
The dream had haunted him for years, the dreams that were not merely dreams.

They were memories, memories that haunt him from that day- now more than ten years ago.

He never knew what had happened, by the time he’d regained consciousness, he was back at the Capitol. The Elders said they’d all be found passed out in the forest, Jongwoon and the others were no where in sight- much to the Elder’s dissatisfaction.

But they had not been heard of or seen of ever since. Kyuhyun had tried many times, out of curiosity- to tug at the bond that him and Zhou mi once shared.

But he had felt nothing, which must only one thing- that Zhou mi is dead.

Kyuhyun shuddered as he remembered the big, clear eyes that that looked at him in despair while driving the blade inside of him.

Shaking his head, he tried to calm himself down. With a flick of his fingers; a looming shadow fell over his room, the darkness drew over him like a black blanket, enveloping him until he could see nothing but darkness.

“The Night Prince” they’d dubbed him, he controlled the darkness and everything that lived by the night. Creatures that came out only when the sun fell bowed to him in command. The darkness was his gift.

But suddenly a spark of light illuminated his room, making him wince. A figure stood at his door, tall and dominating. Sparks of lighting radiated off him with a quiet buzz like he was some kind of broken electronic.

“Something bothers you?” The figure spoke.

“Siwon.” Kyuhyun pursed his lips, the sparks of light making his head throb “Nothing bothers me, you may leave.”

Siwon approached him with a sigh, his light ruining Kyuhyun’s perfect blanket of darkness.

“Please.” Kyuhyun grunted as he gestured at the door, his tone sharp “We can talk tomorrow.”

“You still dream of that day.” It wasn’t a question, but a statement. “You know you can’t just hide into your darkness when something scares you.” Siwon said, his tone gentle.

“Well I am the ‘Night Prince’ for a reason.” Kyuhyun sniped “Now if the ‘Lightning God’ will please leave me alone I would be very pleased.”

“I am no God…” Siwon sighed again, with a small shake of his head he turned away.

Before he left Kyuhyun’s chambers, he lingered at the door.

“They would have all died.” He turned back to look at him with tired eyes “There’s nothing left to be afraid of.”

Kyuhyun could not figure out if the gentleness in his voice was wistfulness or relief, he only managed a small nod before wrapping himself tighter with his darkness.

The stream of time flows gently

And with it we are carried

None of us know what awaits

We only know to keep going

At a school, a young man is taking slow strides on the stage. His soles clicking on the wooden floorboards as the hundreds of students hung on his every word.

‘The Study of the Gifted 101.’ Is projected in large, holographic font onto the dome ceiling.

“After the Third War, it was found that humans had a potential power in them that was never found before- these are dubbed ‘Gifts’. What humans have once considered ‘super powers’. Although many years of research have been conducted, scientists have yet to find where gifts originate from, and the full potential of what our gifts can do. The people born with these powers are called ‘The Gifted’, in our modern day society approximately 1 out of 500 people are Gifted.” The stern young man walked slowly around the stage, hundred of pairs of eyes stared back at him from behind hologram screens.

“But as far as we know now, here’s how it works.” An image appeared on the tall wall behind him. He pointed at the graph projected on it.

“The closest model that can envelope the concept of a ‘Gift’ is one of a basic electric circuit.” He paused, giving time for the students to type frantically into their devices. “The ‘battery’ is comparable to the ‘soul’- the mysterious origin inside of a person that they can pull their power from, it is still yet to define what part of the human body actually contains the ‘soul’, or if it bears any physical being at all.” He stops, letting the silence hang suspense into the air before continuing.

“Now if we imagine that ‘Gifts’ are a running circuit in a human body- a ‘Current’ is just like electrical currents, it keeps the whole thing working. But more, you are able to sense interfering currents if they approach you- the proximity that someone can sense varies by person.”

“Next, the switch- ‘Instincts’. Instincts acts as a switch, you pull on your instincts in order to control your power. Your instincts also act as a guard- they switch on automatically your current senses danger approaching. Most ‘gifted’ are born fully aware of their instincts, in rare cases instincts are developed.”

“It is unknown whether that normal people- us without gifts are born with instincts and are unaware of them, or that we do not have instincts at all…”

“…Continuing on our circuit model, the light bulb- or whatever electrical device you are powering- is your power, your gift. Some ‘Gifeted’ have powers considered more mediocre than others; it is still unknown what exactly determines each person’s Gift. But it is extremely rare to find ones that are powerful enough to be largely destructive, for an example- ones that control the nature’s elements and such.

Thus, those who do are made The Guardians- they are the most powerful people that protect over our land.” Scanning the time device on his wrist, he stops- dead this time.

“Alright, let’s leave it to here today. Please feel free to contact me for any enquiries.”

The screen flickers again, only some black type on a white background.

“Prof. Kim Yesung” with his mail code below.

“Thank you class, you are dismissed.”

---

When morning came, and Kyuhyun’s darkness disappeared with the light.

Several maids- flitted into the room and broke Kyuhyun out of his shallow sleep.

“Sir Kyuhyun, it is time to get changed for the board meeting.” They chirped in unison.

Kyuhyun groaned very ignobly.

When he stepped into the board room, an hour later- the other three were waiting already.

Leeteuk greeted him with a tight smile and a nod.

Next to him was Siwon, he gave Kyuhyun an encouraging smile when their eyes met, not betraying any hint of the conversation they had the night before.

Kyuhyun took his place next to Ryeowook, who beamed at him with an innocence that he preserved from when he was still a child. Kyuhyun forced his mouth to curl into a smile back at him, sometimes he was jealous of Ryeowook.

“Shall we begin?” Leeteuk scanned around the table and smiled.

---

Professor Kim Yesung stepped out of the building with a sigh, tugging on his done up tie.

“Yesung hyung!” A clear voice called out to him before he was greeted with flashing white teeth and an engulfing hug as a tall figure threw themselves into him.

“Mi.” Yesung smiled at the tall boy who was pulled back to grin down at him.

“Did you enjoy class today?”

The boy he called Mi nodded with enthusiasm “Of course! We were given access cards to the Art Studios today!”

“Good.” Yesung stretched on his tiptoes to ruffle the boy’s head affectionately

“Let’s go home.”

-

Dinner was a simple affair with just the both of them, Mi chatted on endlessly about his day while Yesung listened with a quiet smile.

“I met this boy in Art History class today- Kris.” Mi said in between mouthfuls “He was very tall, even taller than me… But guess what? He’s a ‘Gifted’!”

Yesung stopped dead in his tracks, lowering his chopsticks slowly.

“Oh?” He paused thoughtfully “That is- strange.”

“Right?” Mi exclaimed with wonder, not noticing the change air.

“I asked him why he decided to go through traditional education rather than going to Royal School for The Gifted, but he said it was because he didn't want to do anything besides Study of The Arts. Quite strange of him, right?”

He took a sip of soup and pondered, “I wonder what his gift is, I didn’t ask, presumably not too powerful though, or he would have been chosen as a potential Guardian.”

Yesung tensed, slowly taking a sip of his own soup “Presumably.”

He suddenly raised his eyebrows like he’d remembered something “Oh! And he told me he only discovered he was a Gifted when he was seven years old! How rare is that? I wonder if there are people who discover it even older… are there, hyung?” He asked with curiosity, knowing well enough of the older man’s profession.

Yesung pursed his lips “There- are, but discovering your gift after puberty is very, very unlikely. Only a few cases have been recorded, ever.”

“Oh.” Mi looked a little disappointed “I was wondering if I could be a gifted one, or any one of us! Imagine that hyung?”

Yesung frowned, but only for a split second- so fast the other boy did not even notice, before he broke into a tender smile again.

“Don’t be silly.” He reached out to ruffle the boy’s hair again.

His expression darkened when Mi turned back to his food with a small shrug.

So I decided to make it a kind of futuristic/ super powers thingy now....of just a imagined fantasy world all together... haha I don't know even I'm confused myself.
I pretty much failed high school physics so if the circuit analogy is wrong, don't even bother telling me let's just pretend it's right (unless it's like- "please get hide at home where you ignorance and idiocy can be hidden away from the rest of the world" wrong, if so please tell me!)
