He's reading out of the book he calls a bible, "Say, Mary," he says, "why don't you take a look." But they're just words to her, and she says, "Strange markings on paper aren't what we're looking for." So she takes his hand and shows him her bible, sleeping in a cradle, and says, "Say, John, would you listen to her breathing? Look at her tiny fingers and tell me that's not a miracle." And John shakes his head and says, "No, that's just genetics. It's logical like life." So Lisa offers, "I'll take you to heaven," and when they are out at sea throws back her head and that's it, she says. "We could be the only people alive." "No no no," Sammy tells them, "When you're walking the border between sleep and conciousness and you can feel the pillow against your cheek but you can still taste your dreams? That is what God is made of, the space in between." But children don't know these things anyways, and who're they to say? The old man takes their hands and they walk right off the earth and the only one left is the girl standing in the shadows that heard it all and she just shakes her head and says

"Ice cream is my religion."
