Open Letter to HR People Everywhere

Feb 12, 2005 08:57

I'm typing this up because I've noticed that so many job postings have extremely unrealistic expectations.

For all those HR People out there who have to put out job postings for IT jobs, I have a couple of pointers for you.

1: Computer Science is programming, not fixing computers or administering networks. Thus, someone with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science is not going to have a single clue on how to keep a network up and running, unless they have other training. Likewise, Computer Engineering is computer design, i.e., figuring out how to make video cards work better, or faster processors, not fixing a computer.

2: A Bachelor's degree in IT is absolutely useless. The reason for this is that 'real colleges', the kind that can offer Bachelor's degrees, are prohibited by law from teaching any hands-on or applied courses. They can only teach theory. Technical Colleges, on the other hand, teach primarily hands-on courses, even though they only offer two-year diploma programs. Thus, the hands-on training from a technical school is actually better than the two extra years of nothing but theory in a 'real college'. The majority of people who have Bachelor's degrees in IT are pretty much clueless. Those who do have any skills at all have extensive amateur experience from working on their own computers and usually from setting up LAN parties with their friends.
