UPCOMING EVENTS at HP DARKARTS ANGSTY AUGUST is currently posting and will continue through the end of the month. Please do look at some of our recs if you haven't been following them and if time isn't your friend at the moment, remember to bookmark the Masterlist when the rec fest concludes. Thanks to all those who have participated by offering up such deliciously angsty recs.
The mods have been busy discussing the details of our upcoming challenges and we wanted to keep you in the loop, so that you can set some time aside to play on the dark side with us. Starting September 1st, sign ups for the IMPERIUS CHALLENGE will open, and we will release all of our pimping materials on the same day. We will be posting a small handful of prompts for inspiration, although you should feel free to use your own prompt if the muse strikes. The only caveat is, although you don't have to incorporate the Imperius Curse itself, the challenge will be focusing on fanworks incorporating one of the following elements, all of which have canon links to the Imperius Curse:
- Being forced to act against one's will;
- A complete or partial loss of control;
- Inducement to commit crime;
- Performing magic beyond age/capability;
- Mind control;
- Memory loss/addled mind;
- A false sense of happiness/security;
- Resisting adversity;
- Dark magic leaving its mark;
- Feeling pain after previously feeling numb.
As previously mentioned, this is intended to be a low-stress challenge along the lines of a kink or comment meme, although the mods will gather the submissions together and post them anonymously to the community over the posting period during the week of 28 October - 3 November to coincide with Halloween, simply because we think it's rather fun to be anonymous for a while! Fanworks created for the challenge are encouraged to be between 500 - 5000 words (though if a bunny bites, we won't turn longer fic away) or art (and crafts), fanvids, or podfic. More details coming on 1 September.
On the META front we will keep the community active in September while people work on pieces for the Imperius Challenge, by hosting a meta discussion about why we write and read dark!fic and what we consider dark. We will also be touching upon making fandom a safe place for those who enjoy dark fic, and how it is necessary to break down all barriers when running and hosting dark fic events. Our next character study coincides nicely with developing Pottermore canon, and we will be offering up a character study of Remus Lupin for discussion in November.
Over the holiday period we know everyone is busy, but we can't let Christmas go by without some darkness and despair as a gift to those who have helped this community get off to a cracking start in its first year. We are pleased to introduce to you to IN THE SHADOW OF THE SEASON.
We are seeking 12 participants to write something dark and seasonal, based around your assigned prompt, which will be a magical item, creature, potion or curse selected by the mods and emailed to you with confirmation that you have been selected to participate.
We know people are swamped and so much is going on over this period and we don't want people to feel overwhelmed with writing or reading commitments, hence capping our numbers. We hope this approach will encourage people who really do want to dabble in some low key darkness this year over the holiday season to participate. Minimum word count will be 500, so please do express an interest even if you think you could only commit to a short piece. All ships are welcome, in a no holds barred environment.
We will post the pieces anonymously, as gifts to the community, for the 12 days counting down to Christmas Eve. Interest should be expressed by email to hpdarkarts@gmail.com before 31 August, along with a note about the pairings/characters you think you would be most likely to choose to write. We will notify our successful volunteeers in advance so they can get cracking, and we will post the participant list, pinch hitters and the assigned prompts on 1 October. Please help us get the word out by using the banner below.
