Title: Achievement
Rating: Nothing to be worried about. No swearing or inappropriate content. (K/G)
Type/Genre: I guess you could call it a short story, a little over 1,000 words. I wrote it for the
Kangin's return project. I have almost all required 6 finished, and they are pretty short. They can all fit together in succession, but can also be read by themselves. I've been putting more energy into my long running fics. ^^; Sorry!
Pairing: Kangin and Han Geng
Summary: Kangin's returned! What kind of sentiments await him?
It was a crisp, cool morning outside the SM Entertainment dorms. With his friends gently touching his back and leading him inside, Youngwoon, formerly known as Kangin, would be able to get his stage name and career back.
Walking inside the dorms, he went up several flights of stairs, the same basic steps he had remembered. It wasn't that he was the most sentimental person, but he couldn't help feeling a twinge of warm happiness walking up the stairs. He lived with his family, not in the dorms- but he frequently stopped to visit his fellow bandmates before his army service. Taking in the scent, everything smelled the same, felt the same... but so much had changed.
Today they would all be gathering at the 11th floor, where Yesung (Jongwoon), Kyuhyun, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, and Ryeowook stayed. The rest were all lived on the 12th floor, known to be the loudest. Stepping inside, he slipped off his shoes and shuffled after the others into the kitchen.
“Youngwoon, we made you something special!” Leeteuk (A.K.A Jungsu) said with a smile.
“Oh no, not Kyuhyun's cooking!” Kangin replied in horror.
“HEY!”
“Stop it! No insults on your first day back!” Teuk scolded Kangin, slapping his arm.
“I hope that means I can insult everyone else, but they can't insult me?” Leeteuk slapped him harder and after giving him a disciplinary warning, the two began play fighting, with Kangin being overly aggressive and Leeteuk shrieking in amusement and pain.
“Hey lovebirds, are we ever going to present this thing, or are we just gonna watch you two give us an exhibition match?” Heechul's eyes narrowed as he looked anywhere but at Kangin and Leeteuk.
“Sorry. Anyway, here's our surprise! I hope you like it, Youngwoon.” Leeteuk's warm smile melted Kangin's heart, and he stood closer to his friend, when the giant bundle of balloons were brought through the doorway, along with a camouflage colored cake. Even more surprising was the person carrying it.
“Hankyung?! What are you doing here?!” Heechul completed his Kangin's thoughts for him.
“Well, seeing as you've been in the army and Youngwoon just finished his service, Jungsu thought it would be a nice idea for as many of us to get together as possible. As soon as he uttered those words, Kibum quietly crept out of the doorway with a huge smile. Kangin took Kibum in close, wrapping his oversized arms around Kibum's frame, and hugging Hankyung shortly afterward. He was overcome by the sincerity of Leeteuk's kind gesture.
“Oh yeah, I can't forget this!” Kibum grabbed a bag, pulling out the contents- beer and wine. “Not that any of you need it...” Sungmin slowly approached the wine before Kyuhyun slapped his hand away, making Sungmin rub his hand with a pout on his face.
“Thank you, Jungsu, Kibum, Hankyung... everybody... This is really, really great... but I already got cake! Are you trying to make me fat after I got in such good physical shape?” Everyone laughed, being able to detach themselves from the world, to enjoy themselves, if only for a short time.
Afterward, Hankyung, Kibum, and Heechul were glued to each other, and a video game tournament ensued, along with beer and wine drinking. Of course Hankyung and Heechul were there with their love of computers, and the legendary GameKyu just had to get in on the action. Sungmin was now drunken and mad due to the alcohol, with Siwon lecturing him on how a good Christian should behave. Meanwhile, Donghae seemed quite intrigued by the new fish tank in the corner, while Eunkyuk (Hyukjae) was busy taping up a new monkey poster in his room.
Surprisingly, after only a few hours, Kyuhyun copped out of the tournament finals, mumbling something rapidly along the lines of; “Sungmin...looks so damn cute but gets so vicious whenever I get to bed late....” Eventually, Kibum returned to his separate dorm, and Heechul went to get his “beauty sleep.” What else could would expect from the princess of the house? (Other than that, he seemed a little more snappy toward Kangin than usual.. maybe it was just the alcohol?) Either way, for the next few minutes, Hankyung and Kangin sat next to each other in silence. It was sort of awkward, seeing as the two respected one another as former group members, but Kangin didn't really know too much about Hankyung. He didn't know what to say, or where to start.
“So, I've heard your career in China is good.” Nice, Kangin. Beautiful way to start a conversation, go ahead and state the obvious. Hankyung chuckled.
“Yeah, I've been very lucky. I've gotten a lot of awards, done a lot of new things, met a lot of new people... it's all very humbling.” Kangin was actually able to relate.
“I know how you feel. The army training... it does something to a man. It really made me reflect on who I was, and where I was going. After I... you know... got in that accident, everyone was so disappointed in me, and I was so disappointed in myself.... but I think camp gave me what I needed. Time to be alone, work with new people and make new bonds. The military is actually a pretty beautiful experience.”
“Maybe going away for awhile was what both of us needed. Maybe it's what we needed all along?” Hankyung smiled softly and looked at Kangin, the glow of the T.V casting colors vividly across the room, shining in the Chinese man's short hair. Kangin took a sip of his beer, not used to this type of contemplative conversation.
“Yeah. Maybe it was something we were meant to do.. .meant to experience, I mean. All the hardships, they did something for us. Plus, I lost about 40 pounds*. “ Hankyung raised his eyebrows and smiled.
“Nicely done. But don't go getting a big head- you're not the only one who got a better physique! I finally have abs!” Kangin and Hankyung laughed. Even though they hadn't spent much time together, Kangin liked the feel of Hankyung's presence. It was gentle and warm, like the sun's rays on a spring day, and his laugh was the most hilarious he's ever heard- beside Leeteuk's, that is.
“Well,” Hankyung deliberately sipped some of his beer. “I'll be going to bed now. See you in the morning?” Kangin only nodded as Hankyung patted his shoulder and walked away... but before he could leave, he reached over to pat him back.
“We sure have achieved a lot, huh?”
“Yeah. We sure have.”
