Netflix movie
The Falling (British, 2014)
Writer/Director: Carol Morley
This is an either/or movie. Either you think this is a poetic rendering of the inner life of adolescent girls or you think, when will this pretentious tedium be over? I’m mostly in the latter camp.
It’s 1969 in an all girls’ school. Two girls are the closest of friends. Tragedy happens. And first the girl most affected by it has sudden fainting spells. Soon lots of girls are having them. The people running the school are at pains to make it you know what girls are like, it’s all silly nonsense.
Maisie Williams is one of the leads and that’s probably why it’s on my queue. I’m a fan, but I’m not drawn to adolescent angst. She has a tough home life with a mother who simply ignores her existence. When Maisie speaks her mother looks right through her. There is no reply Maisie also has a brother she’s a lot too close to, too, too close.
So nothing here captured my attention until about the last 20 minutes when Maisie’s grief is so overwhelming her and nobody gets it.
This really could use subtitles because most everybody mumbles and it’s hard to connect to a film when you’re making faces at it because you're saying what? What?
My movies
Film Noir
This is a documentary, short and not deep. A bunch of older white guys talking movies, including James Ellroy who always wants to project sinister but comes across as creepy.
I watched a lot of noir films back when they filled television time and the best part of this dvd are the crisp clips of the films. There was one featuring Charles Bronson which puzzled me because I never saw it even though I was a staunch fan of his for a while (ask me how many times I saw The Great Escape. A lot).
Noir films had a marked effect on me. The most interesting dreams I have are like a noir, full of shadows and a convoluted plot.
Anyway, I think I won’t keep this, just pass it along to the library someday.
The Fountain A genre that’s not my favorite is romance. But I guess it makes a difference if one of the lovers is dying and/or is Rachel Weisz.
I saw this in the theater with my friend and her husband. She and I really liked it but the husband didn’t. It’s a movie for gurlz!
A movie that includes Mayans, conquistadores, a dying woman, a guy wearing a karate outfit talking to a tree in a golden bubble, a Queen with dirty fingernails, cancer research, and the Inquistition won my heart.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Hahaha.
Not a linear movie and filled with mysterious doings that it’s up to you to interpret.
A keeper.
Let’s see...Jeremy Renner is going to be in two things in November. I’m going to have to sign up for Paramount for a while, besides Disney.
I set up a new printer which was only a little more annoying than it should be. I’m still on a learning curve on the new phone.
I think one of the tires on the car has a slow leak.
I’m fed up with FedEx. I order from Chewy and instead of the 3-4 days delivery advertised, FedEx takes at least a week, if they deliver at all. The last order is still floating around Tracy, Ca. They just don’t seem able to put hands on it.
