Netflix movie

The Trip to Italy (British, 2014)

Writer/Director: Michael Winterbottom

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon take trips together. They amble along, this time in Italy, eating wonderful food in beautiful surroundings. They amuse each other.

They use their own names but have fictionalized lives and families. I found it mostly amusing but I think Brydon would get on my nerves. Could we have just a few hours without your impressions (which I don’t believe are always that good)?

Here they are in pursuit of Lord Byron’s stopping places.

Nothing deep here but I enjoy the series about their trips and the other two on my queue.

Worth watching.

I should have watched Babe next but I’m in too fragile a mood to deal with animal trauma. I know it’s a good movie and I’ll get back to it someday...in the future.

So instead I moved on to…
My movie

Batman Begins
I saw this in a theater and was very taken with it. And I still like the first half a lot but I found my attention wandering towards the end. It’s too long and it has the obligatory over-extended car chase because, well, fanboys.

It was the first time I saw Cillian Murphy on the screen and I thought him very disturbing, but now I’m kind of used to him. Still odd-looking, though. And then there’s Tom Wilkinson doing what he thinks is an American accent.

Michael Caine makes you feel you’re in safe hands whenever he comes on screen.

Cannot fault the production; all the money is on the screen.

Worth keeping but not as enamoured with it as I was.

21 What lifts your spirits when you’re feeling down?
Food? Sweets?

22 Do you think everything happens for a reason?
Oh. Oh. Don’t get me started. This is such a first world fantasy. Do the child prostitutes think everything for a reason? Do the boys kidnapped and made to be soldiers think that?
It’s a movie star saying: I was up for a part but didn’t get it but then because I was free I got a better, bigger part. I honestly believe everything happens for a reason!
I honestly would like to smother you with a pillow.

23 Would you rather be a famous actor or a famous director?
At my age I wouldn’t want to be famous. Too much trouble.

24 If you won a huge lottery, with more money than you could use, what charitable organization or civic donation would you fund?
Well, for sure, the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee and Chimp Haven that provides retirement and safety for chimps that have been used for medical research. I should have a lot of money because I have a lot of places I give it to.

25 What three fictional characters (from film, TV, or books) do you most strongly identify with?
I grew up watching old movies, mostly black/white. Humphrey Bogart was cool but you took him as he was or you didn’t. No difference to him. But I always like John Garfield. He always wanted to explain himself. He could explain it all if he only had a chance. I also want to give TMI.
And Thelma Ritter and Eve Arden could come into a scene, size it up and have something penetrating to say about it. I wish I were like that.

26 What did you enjoy doing most today?
I got started on the bookcase. I stop when it gets too sweaty.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The county is shut down again. The gym will be closed and luckily I just got my haircut again. The surge in cases of Corona seems to have come from parties and get togethers people are having. Parties!

I’m putting together another bookcase, and should be doing it now. This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. You can leave a comment at Dreamwidth or here.
